There has certainly been a lot of hype surrounding this visual. We mean, Tay Tay is practically naked in it, thanks to a body suit à la Ghost in the Shell. The old Taylor would NEVER have done that! (May she rest in peace.)

Ghost In The Shell Is Gorgeous, With A Really Big BUT! (As In — It's Almost Great, But…)

no title

Much ado has been made of the whitewashing in the live action remake of Ghost In The Shell; that alone will probably keep many from bothering to give the film their business.

But we were curious — was all the controversy even worth it? We mean, is the movie any good at all anyway??

Well, the answer to that is apparently almost. In perusing what the critics are saying, the resounding opinion is that the filmmakers have created a gorgeous, technically immaculate recreation of a cartoon that seemed impossible to adapt to live action.

Unfortunately, some of the darkness of the original was lost along the way — ironically keeping any of the reviews from being too glowing.

The consensus regarding star/controversy fulcrum Scarlett Johansson is that she's very good in the role… but was better in her other, more challenging not-quite-human roles in Her and Under The Skin (both of which you should totally see!).

Will what the critics have to say sway you? Ch-ch-check out our review roundup (below) to find out!

Scarlett Johansson Defends Herself Against Whitewashing Claims: 'I Would Never Attempt To Play A Person Of A Different Race, Obviously'

Scarlett Johansson and the makers of Ghost In The Shell have faced a lot of criticism for being another example of Hollywood whitewashing.

In the film, ScarJo plays a cyborg called The Major (a character whose name in the original manga was Motoko Kusanagi), a role many have argued should have gone to a Japanese actress.

Now the Avenger is finally responding to the criticism by pointing out she's definitely not trying to play an Asian character.

In an interview with GMA's Michael Strahan, ScarJo explained:

The ensem also happens to be two-in-one, with a chevron print Azzedine Alaïa mock-neck top paired with a feathery skirt also by the designer.

Studded boots and belt toughened up the look even further.

Doesn't she look like a really fashionable badass??? We bet she could kick ass in this outfit.

Ghost In The Shell Meme-Generator TOTALLY Backfires & Gets Repurposed By Fans Calling Out Whitewashing!

Did they really not see this coming?

Paramount Pictures is still being haunted by Ghost in the Shell's whitewashing controversy, and the latest promotional campaign for the action flick didn't help!

Fans of the popular manga and anime franchise have been up in arms over Scarlett Johansson playing the lead role of Major — a Japanese character named Major Motoko Kusanagi in the original — and were just handed a golden opportunity to troll the studio over the miscasting.

Paramount unveiled a meme-generator over the weekend with the hashtag #IAmMajor, encouraging fans to upload photos of themselves and add empowering phrases like "I am strong" and "I am a fighter."

Well, that plan completely backfired. And critics instead used the generator to chastise the casting of ScarJo!

The results included images of the white actress with the words "I am not Japanese," and photos of the anime character with eulogy-like captions.

Other posts suggest Japanese actresses that could have been considered instead of the Avengers actress, like

ICYMI, their pick (that they continue to defend) to play a character named Major Motoko Kusanagi was Scarlett Johansson

In response, two stand-up comedians — Jes Tom (26) and Chewy May (28) — put together a powerful PSA demonstrating the effects of whitewashing in film.

The video tells the story of a young Asian girl struggling to find a comic book featuring a woman of color — until she stumbles upon a copy of the original Ghost in the Shell.

Years later, the girl as a young adult is seen walking the streets of New York, only to be disappointed when she passes a movie poster of Scarlett playing her beloved character.

May told BuzzFeed of the message she wanted to send in making this project:
