Actor and LGBT advocate Wilson Cruz will join GLAAD's staff as the Strategic Giving Officer. He will help the esteemed organization build support within the community.
Here's what Cruz said:
"For more than two decades GLAAD has combatted anti-LGBT images in the media and changed the national conversation about LGBT people. Today, GLAAD is also using its media expertise to create a culture that is accepting and safe for all young people. From Spanish-language media to sports, Hollywood to the newsroom, GLAAD shares the stories and sparks the discussions that make the world a better place for LGBT people everywhere. I am proud and excited to grow this culture-changing work. ”
Seems like a solid choice for the job! Not to mention - extremely humble!
Here's what the GLAAD prez said:
"Throughout his career, Wilson Cruz has been a strong advocate for LGBT Americans. His work in film and television, as well as his commitment to supporting local and national LGBT organizations exemplifies GLAAD's mission to move LGBT equality forward."
Bravo on a pick well done!
And if U wanna catch up on some classic Wilson, check out Party Monster or He's Just Not That Into You!
Aww! Such an AMAZING moment between a mother and son!
Chaz Bono was honored with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award at the GLAAD Media Awards and who better to present it to him than his mother Cher!
The annual award honors those who have dedicated their life in the media to fighting homophobia. Chaz is the 21sh recipient since it was first given to the Hollywood casting director for whom it is named after.
Watch the video (above) to hear Cher has to say about her son's decision to transition and, more importantly, her own transition into fully accepting his decision!
Josh Hutcherson is winning everything these days! Go, Peeta!
GLAAD has announced that Hutcherson will receive the Vanguard Award, which is presented to media professionals who, through their work, have increased the visibility and understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
GLAAD President Herndon Graddick said:
"Emerging as a leader in a new generation of equality advocates, Josh Hutcherson has consistently used his platform to help young people understand that no one should face discrimination simply because of who they are. Josh's commitment to achieving equality for every American is a message he carries in his work both on screen and off, earning him the honor of being GLAAD's youngest-ever Vanguard Award recipient."
What an honor for Mr. Hutcherson! He totally deserves it and even though Hutcherson is straight (unfortunately lol) he’s done a lot of good for the gay community. Plus, he was in The Kids Are Alright, one of our faves!
Such AMAZING progress in the world of beauty pageantry!
Transgender beauty queen Jenna Talackova was originally discriminated against and rejected by the 2012 Miss Universe Canada pageant because she was born a male, but after much hell raised from organizations like GLAAD, the pageant organizers changed their tune.
First they announced that she would be allowed to compete, but NOW the Miss Universe Organization has decided to allow ALL transgender contestants to compete from now on. Paula Shugart, the president of the pageant organization, said in a statement:
Thanks to the wonderful organization GLAAD, transexual beauty queen Jenna Talackova has been cleared to compete in the 2012 Miss Universe Canada pageant!
Previously, the Donald Trump-owned organization had squashed Jenna's dreams by disqualifying her because she was born a male. Since discrimination is NEVER cool, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation called upon the Miss Universe Organization to review her case.
In a statement released on Monday, the organization revealed they had reversed their decision:
Of course it is, but we still like to hear people say it!
While speaking at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards in New York City on Saturday, Growing Pains star Tracey Gold told the audience that "there's nothing wrong with being gay."
