No matter what's going on in your life, it looks like we all have one MAJOR thing to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. The number of new HIV infections and deaths related to AIDS have dropped to their LOWEST numbers since the epidemic reached its peak!
The 2011 UNAIDS World AIDS Day report states that this year has been a "game-changing year" for the worldwide fight against the disease.
HIV infections dropped 21% compared to their highest in 1997, while AIDS deaths also declined by 21% since 2005.
Such an awesome note to end the year on!
There are many reasons for the decline including people having fewer sexual partners, using more condoms and, perhaps most importantly, "a massive scale up in access to HIV treatment."
Although the figures show we're turning the tide in the global fight against AIDS, the report suggests funding will need to be increased from $15 billion to $24 billion a year for our success against the disease to continue!
