Plenty of people out there think that a glass or two of alcohol before bedtime is an easy way to get a good nights sleep, but these two studies prove them WRONG!
One small study in Japan examined the effects of alcohol on sleep in 10 university students. They were divided into three groups, in which one went to sleep without alcohol, one with a low dose of alcohol, and one with a high dose.
The results proved that while alcohol helped participants fall asleep faster, their sleep was shallow and disrupted, compared to those who did not drink. Alcohol acted as a stimulant and the higher the consumption, the higher the heart rate.
A larger study found similar results when asking 93 men and women in their early-to-mid 20s to sleep after intoxication.
After measuring the quality, depth and duration of their sleep under the influence, they found participants not only slept LESS when intoxicated, but woke up more frequently, felt more tired in the morning, sleepier at the end of the day, and spent less tim in deep REM sleep.
Researchers also found that women's sleep was more affected by alcohol's disruptive influence and felt greater sleep deprivation the next day.
So if you're looking for a good night's sleep, remember to think before you drink!
