Good thing Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug didn't find this buried treasure!
Remember that ridiculously lucky couple that stumbled upon a gold coin hoard worth $10 million when they were walking their dog in Northern California?!
Well, apparently they might not be so lucky since the cold coins might have been stolen from the San Francisco Mint!
And do you know what that means?!
It means they're the governments property and the government just might take them back!!
But, but, buttttt how do they know for SURE it was the stolen coins?!
Well, apparently there WAS a heist at the SF Mint during the turn of the century, which was documented in the papers, and a coin that was stolen in that heist was a "1866 Liberty $20 gold piece" which did not have the usual "In God We Trust" slogan on it!
Which was found in the stash but ALSO proves that the heist was an inside job!
According to Jack Trout, the historian/coin enthusiast who found the newspaper proof, it was a private, never issued, only one made like, ever, coin!
“This was someone’s private coin, created by the mint manager or someone with access to the inner workings of the Old Granite Lady (San Francisco Mint). It was likely created in revenge for the assassination of Lincoln the previous year (April 14, 1865). I don’t believe that coin ever left The Mint until the robbery. For it to show up as part of the treasure find links it directly to that inside job at the turn of the century at the San Francisco Mint.”
So does this mean the government will insist the coins be returned to them?!?!
We sure hope not!
That would just be plain RUDE!
