This is absolutely incredible.

A hero dog has changed the policy at a battered woman shelter.

Last year, a woman was nearly beaten to death by her boyfriend.

He literally took a hammer and began beating her with both ends of it.

When she was lying on the floor, near death, her Great Dane threw himself on top of her, absorbing most of the hammer blows from the boyfriend until the man threw them both out of a second story window!

We have trouble even believing one human could do that to another.

When the woman called a domestic abuse survivor shelter, they made arrangements for her but not her savior… no pets were allowed.

The CEO of the center said:

"She was not going to leave her pet alone with him. He saved her life."

Her Great Dane had suffered several broken ribs, a broken hip and serious bruising.

The shelter had to make an exception for this hero.

They said that 40% of woman who suffer domestic abuse won't leave their pets for fear of leaving them with the abuser, so they live in their car or they stay.

Risking their life for their animal.

The CEO said:

"They provide so much comfort, and to have to leave that pet behind is so heartbreaking.

It has become abundantly clear that the incredible therapeutic benefits that pets can have on a family greatly outweigh the cost and inconvenience of housing them."

So the CEO's center has built 7 kennels and now takes pets.

It took the love, loyalty and bravery of one dog to change the policy of women's shelters, and save 40% more lives.

Amazing, simply amazing. This dog deserves a medal.

Today's fan pet of the day is… Hercule!

TeddyHilton.com reader, Rosemarie, sent us pictures of her gorgeous two-year-old Great Dane from Québec.

Hercule loves to play with his friends at the park and adores car rides.

Even though he's 130-pounds (holy shiz!) he's still Rosemarie's little baby, and still sleeps in her bed with her.

What a cute pooch!

Lily is a Great Dane who lost both of her eyes due to an incurable condition when she was 18 months old.

She originally lived with her sister dog, Maddison, and the two of them have been at a shelter for the past 5 years.

Maddison and Lily are inseparable, with Maddison acting as Lily's seeing eye dog.

She always walks close to her and touches her to lead her around.

They sleep together and play and bark just like normal dogs.

But every time someone visited the shelter, they were overlooked because they're big dogs, come as a pair and one was blind.

Until recently!!

After the story of Lily and Maddison went global, hundreds of people suddenly offered to open their homes to the big doggies.

A spokesperson for the shelter said:

Emmitt Thunderpaws the Great Dane waited nine long months for his favorite person to return home from the military.

When he could finally sense that he was coming home, Emmitt just couldn't wait before pouncing. Sooooo cute. It shows how much unconditional love dogs will have for their caretakers.

What a giant bitch!

Nova, a Great Dane, who's 2 feet, 11.51 inches tall is the world's tallest female dog, according to Guinness World Records.

That's 35.51 inches from paw to shoulder for Nova, who takes up a lot of space in her owner's house in Addison, Ill. and there's 160 pounds packed onto that frame. She eats through 50 pounds per week.

Her owner Ann Suplee said strangers often say her dog looks like "a horse galloping" and ask her "Are you getting ready for the Kentucky Derby?" according to a statement from Guinness.
Aren't people funny?

We think Nova should go on a date with Giant George of Tucson, the 43 inches tall Great Dane that holds the record for tallest male dog.

New York State's official animal is the beaver (yep). Their official insect is the ladybug, fish is the brook trout and shell is the bay scallop.

However the state has yet to adopt an official dog… until now!

Thursday lawmakers introduced a bill that will give the state an official dog.

The first state to claim an official dog was Maryland with the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, flowed by Pennsylvania's Great Dane. North Carolina chose the Plott Hound as it was the only dog breed indigenous to the state. Other official state dogs also are indigenous to their state, including the Boston Terrier (Massachusetts) and the Alaskan Malamute (Alaska).

What is New York's official going to be?

The proposed breed is the Rescue dog!
