We were SO excited when we heard that Barbra Streisand would be directing a remake of 1967 hit Gypsy, but it sounds like it won't be happening…
At least if lyricist Stephen Sondheim has anything to say about it!

Lindsay Lohan denying a criminal accusation?!?
NEVER!!!
Ha! Srsly though… LiLo is apparently telling friends that she definitely did NOT punch fortune-telling Tiffany Mitchell at Avenue!
But… BUT…
She *did* call her a gypsy. And she'll totally own up to that part.
…but only cuz gurl was trying to steal a purse (according to Linds' side)!
Of course, Tiffany remains adamant. Following Lindsay's INSANE arrest Thursday morning, Tiff has

Are these our dreams coming true?
Besides the fact that this woman looks absolutely amazing and can command the stage like no other, she's also got singing chops like you wouldn't believe!
Wanna wet your pants a little???
Then watch Bernadette Peters sing Everything's Coming Up Roses from the infamous classic Gypsy in the (above) clip.
It's as incredible as you can imagine.
We love Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee, but ladies… THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT!!

And the world makes sense again.
First, it was happening. Then, things went awry. Then, people thought it might happen. Then … radio silence. For almost an ENTIRE YEAR, we have been waiting with bated breath to know if Barbra Streisand would indeed revive the role of Momma Rose in the acclaimed Stephen Sondheim musical Gypsy for the big screen. We prayed to the musical gods in the heavens above, pleading that Barbra would make this movie, which would be her first musical since Yentil almost 30 years ago.
Today, according to the fine people over at Universal Studios, our prayers have been answer. Gypsy IS happening … and all we can say is:

Barbra Streisand was very close to Broadway writer and director Arthur Laurents.
The two worked on The Way We Were and she was going to collaborate with him again on the new film version of Gypsy.
This is what she has to say about her memories with Laurents:
"Arthur and I go way back to I Can Get It For You Wholesale in 1962. Then we did The Way We Were in 1973 and we were about to do Gypsy together. He created people you care about because he cared about people. I spoke to him a few weeks ago and he sounded so strong, as always. He was lucky to have lived a full and creative life up til the very end. I’ll miss working with him again."
So touching. We're sure it was very hard for her to hear about his passing.
His work of art will always be remembered.
