Gina Rodriguez Opens Up About Her Longtime Battle With Weight Gain & Hashimoto's Disease

Gina Rodriguez

Gina Rodriguez always keeps it real.

In the September issue of Health out this Friday, the 32-year-old opens up about her longtime battle with her weight after being diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease — an autoimmune disease that can cause an underactive thyroid.

The Jane the Virgin star explained:

"It's always been a battle for me with weight. Keeping weight off is very difficult because my metabolism is pretty much shot, which to me felt like a curse when I was 19."

And it's not surprising this disease posed to be even more difficult to deal with as an actress constantly in the spotlight:

"As an actress, I was like, 'Seriously?! In a world that's so vain, I have to deal with the disease that makes you not keep weight off?' But it actually became a blessing because then I got to represent not only women and Latinas, but also women who are dealing with this disease."

We love her optimism!

But that doesn't mean her dietary restrictions don't prove to be a challenge, especially at the craft services table on set (been there):
