Thank you, Facebook! And of course, the woman who was kind of enough to give a stranger one of her kidneys.
David Ensley, a North Carolina man who has had polycystic kidney disease since 2001, suffered a kidney failure in 2009 and would die without a replacement.
Unfortunately for David, finding a kidney donor is no easy task, especially when his entire family was not a match and the odds of him finding a perfect match were 20 million to 1!
In a last ditch effort to reach a possible match, David's sister created a Facebook page asking for a suitable donor, explaining:
"A girlfriend of mine called and said she had a co-worker that had actually found her match on Facebook. I thought, 'what do we have to lose?' I mean, at [that] point, as sick as he was, why not?"
Other than a few minutes taken to perform the simple task, she literally had nothing to lose and only the rest of her brother's life to gain.
In some kind of a miracle, an old friend of the siblings happened to see the page and mentioned it to his wife in passing, never expecting for her to be the answer to their prayers.
Moved by the story, Amy Cunningham got tested and to her surprise, she was a perfect match for a perfect stranger! After losing her father herself 5 years ago, the woman did not want David's two teenage daughters to go through the same thing, explaining:
"They still need their dad. They need to be walked down the aisle. He needs to be there when they have children. If I can help another girl keep her daddy for 10, 15, 20 years just by donating a kidney — heck, I got two."
We definitely "like" this story! The kindness of the human heart and the wonder of technology never ceases to amaze us! Good luck with the new kidney, David!
