5 Easy Ways To Drink More Water

Yes, we all know that we must drink more water! However, for most of us it can be a difficult task to accomplish, especially when our diets are overrun with sugary sodas, energy drinks and endless cups of coffee!

Water can dramatically improve both our mind and body functioning and has the following benefits:

- Suppresses your appetite
- Eliminates toxins
- Increases metabolism
- Hydrates your skin
- Clears your complexion
- Relieves fluid retention

So how do we incorporate more water into our daily routine? Follow my simple tips below to start benefiting from its amazing qualities!

1. Start your day with a large glass of warm water and a squeeze of lemon juice. This will cleanse your system.

2. Carry a water bottle around with you (everywhere). To remind yourself to keep sipping, write "Drink Me" on your water bottle (I have does this many times and it works!).

3. Try to drink 2 glasses of water before every meal. This is a very efficient way to up your intake and with water being an appetite suppressant, you might find that you eat less also.

4. If you work at a desk all day, fill up a large jug with water, lemon slices, lime slices and some mint. Not only does it look appetizing, but you will get into the habit of having a glass each time you sit down.

5. Water doesn't have to be boring or tasteless! Add slices of your favorite citrus fruits, berries, ginger, mint…whatever you find appealing!

Nutrition Tips To Ease Your Holiday Hangover

Ahh, the dreaded hangover. While most aren't as severe as the one that made Bradley Cooper a star, they all still pretty much suck.

Thanks to a slew of upcoming holiday parties, a FitPerez reader is anticipating the worst, but is hoping there are ways to ease the pain.

Not drinking too much is the obvious solution, although Margaux J. Rathbun has some other natural ideas that will answer this reader's question:

Margaux, during the holiday season I go to a lot of parties and drink wine, hard alcohol, and champagne. Tis the season, right? The problem is that I get wicked hangovers the next day. What can I do to make sure my hangovers aren't terrible? Any nutrition tips?

According to Margaux:

In case you have a little “too much” fun one of these nights, there are some ways you can relieve your hangover using nutrition. First of all, be sure that you are staying hydrated with plenty of water, before, during, and after your drinking. You can also try some herbal teas to help settle your stomach, such as ginger and chamomile tea.

Be sure to eat plenty of “hangover healing” foods rich in vitamins (especially B vitamins) and minerals. Apples, bananas, limes, lemons, leafy greens, and whole grains are good choices. Some herbs that can help your hangover include evening primrose oil, cumin, and slippery elm bark. While you are drinking, choose light colored drinks. Drinks that are dark in color tend to have more chemicals that form during fermentation, causing the blood vessels to dilate and produce awful headaches.

Q&A: Dog Won't Drink Water

TeddyHilton.com readers, Maddie and her owner Bre, wrote in with a question for Dr. Patrick Mahaney, saying:

Hi Teddy,

You are adorbz! If you lived in the midwest I would dig a whole to go fine you for a date.

My owner & I both love you and wanted to know if you can find out why I don't seem to have much of an appetite or need for water right now. It is going to be 105 degrees where I live and Bre, my buddy tries to get me to drink plenty of water and eat but I just don't want to.

I love her and know she just wants me to be healthy and happy but I can't seem to care. I only go out to potty and we come back in immediately and she has 4 water dishes set out throughout our house but I just don't seem to want to drink much.

Late late at night she will take me out to the back yard and we run and play and we even play fetch but that is about the only time I want to take a lot of water in. Am I doing something wrong? Should I be drinking more? If so, how does Bre go about convincing me to do that?

Thanks and tell your master, Perez that we love your site and we are glad he put it up, without it I don't know if Bre would have come to the shelter and adopted me, I had been there 5 times and nobody ever wanted to keep me until she came along. She tells me I am in my forever home. I am soooo happy now.

Dr. Patrick responded:

Hello Maddie (or should I say Bre),

Thank you for your question, as many dogs don't type as well as you and certainly don't have the language skills.

All dogs have varying water requirements based on their metabolism, environment, level of activity, degree of illness/health, etc. Perhaps you are sufficing your water needs without Bre seeing the water enter your mouth? If you eat any moist (canned or fresh) foods, eat ice cubes as treats, put your mouth on a water faucet/fountain/sprinkler you may be taking in more moisture than Brie realizes.

Provided you are not showing any other clinical signs of illness, it does not sound as though we need to be concerned about reduced water consumption. If this trend continues and you feel sick (decreased energy/appetite, development of vomit/diarrhea, etc), then please have Bre schedule an examination with your veterinarian.

Stay cool and don't spend too much time out in the 105 degree heat! I don't want our next correspondence to be a report of you having developed a heat related illness (heat stroke).

How Jennifer Aniston's Yoga Teacher Keeps Her In Movie Star Shape

A recent survey has revealed that 65% of the women in America wish they had Jennifer Aniston's abs.

Well ladies, that toned tummy didn't appear over night. In fact, it's the result of working out for 22 long years with El Lay yoga instructor Mandy Ingber!

The successful teacher created and coined her "yogalosophy" by combining traditional yoga poses with calisthenics to increase body strength and flexibility.

In the interview below, Mandy not only discusses what it's like working with Jen, but what it takes to get a body like hers — motivation, dedication, and hydration!

What pose is hardest for Jen?

“It may be plank. I hear her grunt with that one sometimes. Or bringing the knee to the forehead from downward-facing dog—the moves that really engage the core.”

What poses does Jen like the most?

“She likes sun salutations. Those are good for her arms. And she loves balancing poses. She’s very focused and graceful. She could stay in tree pose longer than I could! She’s learned how to stay focused amid a bunch of other stuff happening.”

How are celebs like Jen different when they practice yoga?

“They’re not. There’s no secret. Everyone has to heat up and sweat through it. I’m not here to feed spirituality. I’m no guru, and I don’t see myself as that. Spirituality is highly personal. But what I do with celebs is motivate to keep their workouts going. People need motivation on a daily basis.”

What’s different about your approach to yoga?

“It’s light-hearted and open-minded. I don’t take it too seriously. Life is hard enough—exercise is hard enough! Yoga is detached in a way. It shows you that you shouldn’t let things bother you too much.”

How should you prepare for a hot yoga class?

“Hydration is key. Coconut water or Emergen-C, the vitamin drink mix, are full of electrolytes to fuel the body and have nutritional value but won’t give you that full-stomach feeling, which can make it hard to practice yoga.”

I’ve seen people suddenly explode into tears or laugh like hyenas in classes. What’s that about?

“Yoga can trigger a hit and release sensation. We hold a lot in our bodies. When we get physical and start moving, old stuff comes up to be released. That’s part of the purification process. That’s part of the transformation. We all feel so much better after. The real teacher is your body.”
