Iranian Actress Sentenced To Ninety Lashes

Marzieh Vafamehr lashing

A barbaric decision has been made in Iran, one that definitely does not sit well us.

Iranian actress Marzieh Vafamehr has been sentenced to one year in jail as well as ninety lashes for her work in the Australian film, My Tehran for Sale.

The film, which addresses social alienation, artistic repression, and drug use in Iran, shows Marzieh with a shaved head and without a headscarf.

The technicality behind her sentencing is that she worked on a film whose shooting didn't have the required permit, but the filmmakers swear that claim is baseless.

Iran Ban Glamorous Haircuts & Necklaces For Men

They're at it again!

Last year, Iran issued a catalog of Muslim-approved haircuts, but now they're taking it a step further by banning all glamorous hairstyles and even necklaces.

To make sure the new rules are enforced, the country has trained around 70,000 fashion police who will patrol the streets of Tehran.

And we thought Joan Rivers was bad!

Muhammad Ali Calls For Release Of US Hikers Being Held In Iran

Muhammad Ali has a beef with Iran.

The boxing legend is calling for the country to release two American hikers that have been held there for nearly two years.

On Tuesday he led a prominent group of US Muslims to appeal for Iran freeing Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, who were taken into custody on the Iran-Iraq border. They are charged with espionage.

Former boxers be getting involved with geo-political affairs!

We're Not In The Town, Anymore! Ben Affleck In Talks To Direct Iran Thriller

ben affleck in talks for iran thriller

Looks like Ben Affleck's directing job on The Town gave him some serious points with Warner Bros, cause they've got another project for him…a bigger one.

Affleck is currently in talks with WB to direct Argo, a political thriller set up by George Clooney and his producing partner, Grant Heslov.

The project is based on a Wired Magazine article, and it's about a "stranger-than-fiction CIA rescue operation during the occupation of the American embassy in Tehran in 1979, when six U.S. diplomats were held hostage."

As it happened, the CIA set up a plan where a fake "Hollywood film crew" would go on location in Iran…but really they'd be there to rescue captives from the country.

Sounds exciting to us! And given Affleck's track record with acting directing, we're thinking he could be a very solid choice for this project.

Are U intrigued by this project? Do U think Ben Affleck's directing skillz will do the story justice?

No Love In Iran

It's going to be a sad February 14th this year in the Middle East.

Iranian authorities have banned the production of Valentine's Day gifts this yeas as they see the holiday as a harmful spread of Western culture into their midst.

The union that covers printing works owners have been sent specific instruction not to make any sort of gifts that make mention of the holiday or are covered in symbols like hearts and red roses. The union's head, Ali Nikou Sokhan, points out that their culture has their own days to celebrate love, telling sources:

"Honoring foreign celebrations is the spread of Western culture. Our country has an ancient civilization and various days to honor kindness, love and affection."

Wow. Feel the disdain in that sentence, huh? They can't even get on board with us to celebrate a day which is just about spreading love. What kind of message does that send out?

Awful! Iranian Director Sentenced To Prison For Making "Opposition" Films

This is why we should all be very grateful for the freedoms we have in America.

Acclaimed director Jafar Panahi was sentenced to six years in prison yesterday for "acting and propaganda against the system."

It was no secret that Jafar, who is the winner of many international awards, is not supportive of the Iran's elected leader and fervently campaigned for his opposition. Early last March, Jafar was arrested at his home and then forced into trial, accused of making a film without permission and inciting opposition protests after the 2009 election that led to months of political turmoil.

With this guilty verdict, not only will he spend the next six years in jail, but he is also banned from "making films, writing any kind of scripts, traveling abroad and talking to local and foreign media for 20 years," according to his lawyer.

They have 20 days to appeal the ruling, which we hope they do, but it may not end successfully.

Not only has one of his fundamental freedoms been compromised, but now he must suffer for being brave enough to speak his mind.

Such a shame. He is in our thoughts.

Men Must Wear Muslim-Approved Hairstyles In Iran

And we thought the tight clothing ban in Indonesia was bad!

Later this month at the Modesty and Veil Festival, a photographic catalog will be issued of Muslim-approved hairstyles for men as a way to crack down on Western style haircuts.

An organizer said "the proposed styles are inspired by Iranians' complexion, culture, religion and Islamic law", which means no ponytails or long hair.

If men are caught with non-approved 'dos, they can go to jail where it'll be cut and even receive a fine!
