In 2009, the two Americans accidentally hiked into the wrong territory when they went on a recreational hike in the Iraqi Kurdistan mountains.

Iranian police detained the two men along with fellow hiker and Shane's fiance, Sarah Shourd, on charges of trespassing and suspicion of being American spies.

They were ordered to be detained until their trial.
