Nate Parker wants to change the conversation.

The director's film The Birth of a Nation may be hitting theaters this weekend, but the buzz surrounding his period drama about a slave rebellion has been overshadowed by sexual assault allegations from his college days.

The actor, along with Nation co-writer Jean Celestin, were accused of raping a fellow classmate while studying at Penn State University in 1999. Parker ended up being acquitted; Celestin was found guilty, but the verdict was overturned on appeal.

While both men have always maintained the sex was consensual, the scandal saw new light when the sister of the accuser (who committed suicide in 2012) recently told Variety that it "tormented my sister to see [Parker] thrive while she was still struggling."

When he appeared on Monday's Good Morning America, Parker said he "feels terribly" about the situation but made it clear he was not going to apologize. He told Robin Roberts:

Nate and his Penn State college roommate, Jean Celestin, were both accused of raping a fellow student and in 2001 the director was tried but acquitted after it was revealed that he had a consensual sexual relationship with the woman before the night of the incident in question. As for Mr. Parker's buddy, he was sentenced to six months in prison, but appealed the decision and was ultimately let off the hook.

Just recently, the victim's brother came forward and spoke about his thoughts on the trial and how it affected his sister and lead to her death.

Well now the actor and director has broken his silence after apparently learning for the first time that his accuser had killed herself. In an honest Facebook note, he penned:

This is heartbreaking.

According to Variety, the woman who accused Nate Parker of rape in 1999 killed herself four years ago. The woman's brother who is identified as "Johnny" confirmed the news on Tuesday.

For those unaware of the backstory, the alleged victim accused Nate and his roommate Jean Celestin of raping her when they were students at Penn State.

The student claimed the pair, who went on to direct and write The Birth of a Nation, sexually assaulted her when she was incoherent after a night of heavy drinking. After the woman reported the incident, she alleged the duo harassed and stalked her to the point that she was "afraid for her life."

So disgusting.

Unfortunately, Nate was tried for the crime in 2001 but he was ultimately acquitted after he testified to having sex with the victim prior to the night in question. Since the two had carried on a "consensual" relationship before the incident, jurors decided to let him off the hook.

As for Jean, he was found guilty of sexual assault and was subsequently sentenced to six-months in prison.
