Genes, Not Lifestyle, May Be The Key To Longevity

Genes lead to longevity

Key word being "may", so don't give up on that new fitness routine yet!

A new gene study has found many nonagenarians drink, smoke and don't get regular exercise, which suggests that genetic factors, not lifestyle choices may have more to do with the longevity of our lifetime.

Researchers examined a genetically homogenous group of 477 Ashkenazi Jews between the ages of 95 and 109 to find factors that contributed to their long life. They then compared the results with another group of over 3,000 people who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey at 70-years-old.

While the average BMI was similar between the two groups, 60% of the longer-living men had smoked in their lifetime and a similar proportion consumed alcohol daily. The longer-living participants had also engaged is LESS exercise than their counterparts who lived shorter lives.

Dr. Nir Barzilai, director of the ongoing Longevity Gene Project and the paper's lead author, believes this is further proof that certain genes protect people against certain health problems that occur with age.

Much like us, he doesn't want people to give up on those fitness routines yet either! Recounting a story of a man who had heard about his research, he said:

"He said, 'I was at the gym, I saw the interview and I realized my grandmother is 102.' And he said he's not going to the gym anymore. I thought, no, no! If you have longevity in your family, you have a higher [chance] of longevity yourself, because it is highly inheritable. But you don't know if you inherited it."

Exactly! Just because there are those who will naturally live longer because of a gene, that doesn't mean you have it!

The important thing to remember here is that life isn't all about longevity, but enjoyment! We STILL guarantee you will enjoy life more if you live a healthier lifestyle!

Gwyneth Paltrow To Raise Her Children As Jewish…Even Though She Doesn't Believe In Religion

gwyneth paltrow to raise children jewish

So since she's said she doesn't believe in religion…is the plan to just raise them culturally Jewish? If so, we suppose we couldn't argue with that. Passover food is delish! LOLz.

Following Gwyneth Paltrow's recent appearance on ancestry show Who Do You Think You Are?, she's decided to raise her children as Jewish.

Russell Crowe Lashes Out Against Circumcision On Twitter

Russell Crowe hates circumcision

Circumcision is turning into a hot topic these days!

In the past few months, we've written about a group trying to ban the nipping of the foreskin in San Francisco, but the crusade against the "genital mutilation" has recently gained a famous ally — Russell Crowe.

The actor went on a tweeting tirade against the "barbaric" ritual, writing:

"Circumcision is barbaric and stupid. Who are you to correct nature? Is it real that God requires a donation of foreskin? Babies are perfect."

"I love my Jewish friends, I love the apples and the honey and the funny little hats, but stop cutting your babies."

His words created quite a stir with some of his followers, but he refused to back down for voicing his opinions in the public forum, tweeting:

"I will always stand for the perfection of babies. I will always believe in God, not man's interpretation of what God requires. Last of it, if you feel it is your right to cut things off your babies please unfollow and f**k off; I'll take attentive parenting over barbarism."

Wow! He's pretty serious about this! Note to any circumcised gentlemen out there: Don't change next to Russell Crowe in the locker room! Things might get violent. LOLz!

Realizing he may have offended the entire Jewish community, among others, he recently apologized and wrote:

"I have a deep and abiding love for all people of all nationalities. I'm very sorry that I have said things on here that have caused distress. My personal beliefs aside I realize that some will interpret this debate as me mocking the rituals and traditions of others. I am very sorry."

It's no Mel Gibson incident, but circumcision becomes a touchy subject after attacking a specific religion and its rituals…or their "funny little hats". However, it's just his opinion and he's certainly entitled to share it on the internet for the entire world to see if he wants to.

As far as our opinion on circumcision, there doesn't seem to be any negative effects one way or the other, so we'll leave this debate up to the parents!

Lars Von Trier Makes Extensive Apology For Nazi Comments

Filed under: Icky Icky PooFilm FlickersOops!Kirsten DunstPerezTVEvents

Looks like he genuinely feels awful about what he said.

Earlier today, we learned that Melancholia director Lars von Trier was kicked out of Cannes for comments about being a Nazi and sympathizing with Hitler.

Now, Lars has opened up about his comments, and he seems to be VERY apologetic:

"I'm really sincere when I say I don't really know what hit me. I can understand if you take things out of context. This was very sarcastic and very rude, but that's very Danish. I'm very sorry that it's being taken the wrong way. I must say that I believe strongly that the Holocaust is the worst crime against humanity ever, and I do not sympathize with Hitler one second."

"I didn't want to hurt anyone at all [with this]. Sometimes I hurt people on purpose, when there's provocation that I want to get through that has a meaning. This doesn't have a meaning. I've studied how bad the Jews have been treated in [places such as] Poland and France. This is something that matters very much to me. And this was an idiotic way to behave."

At least he acknowledges that his behavior was idiotic. More from Lars:

"The reason why it's so big, especially here, is that France has had a problematic relationship with Jews, and you [as an interview subject] shouldn't touch such things. But on the other hand, being a cultural radical, you should touch such things."

"It's a major thing at the festival, and very problematic for the festival. And that's a little strange, because even if I was Hitler, what does that have to do with my film being here? It's a festival for films, not for directors."

And more from Lars, clearly feeling bad about the whole situation:

"I don't deserve to win a [Palme d'Or]."

"I'm not sure I'll leave Denmark again."

And here's Lars on his Jewish background:

"Half my life I've made very many Jewish jokes because when you are Jewish, you're allowed to do that. And now I feel kind of in-between."

"I'm very much into the Jewish stuff. Even when I found out I'm not Jewish by my genes, all my children have Jewish names. I'm actually — too Jewish….Oh….Don't write that. I'm just an idiot that should just say home in Denmark and never talk to anybody."

His comments at Cannes were REALLY awful…..but we'll admit that it sounds like he wasn't serious.

What do U think about Lars von Trier's apology? Do U think he sounds sincere?

A little late to board this wagon, don't you think?

Now that Lindsay Lohan is attempting to reform her former hard-pAArtying behavior, she's reportedly trading in her cocaine and sticky fingers for a red string bracelet and the mystical Jewish discipline Kabbalah!

A source close to the actress reveals:"

"She's been reciting an ancient Kabbalah saying - 'Na Nach Nachma Nachman Meuman' - and spreading the message to friends."

We're actually pleased to see that she's exploring herself and her spirituality!

She may have a lot of time soon to reflect upon her life, and a sense of faith may be very helpful to her right now!

John Galliano's Lawyer Speaks

john-gallianos-lawyer-stephane-zerbib-speaks.jpg

Ever since John Galliano issued an apology last week, things from his camp have been relatively quiet — that is until now.

The designer's lawyer Stephane Zerbib, who by the way is Jewish, recently sat down for a lengthy interview with Isreal's YNet News to talk about the circumstances surrounding his client's case.

Here's what he had to say:

Your client is accused of making rather harsh anti-Semitic comments. What is your explanation for this?
"I have no explanation. It could happen to any one of us. Anyone can go to a bar, drink a little and get into a fight with someone."

So alcohol is to blame?
"It’s alcohol mixed with medications. You're very vulnerable when you're in this state. People who don’t know the case can afford to say things and they all have opinions. It's easy to talk, criticize, be appalled. But these people don't know what really happened."

Cynics would say he hired you specifically because you are Jewish.
"If it amuses them let them say it. But I have been John Galliano's lawyer for the past seven years. It has nothing to do with the fact that I have a Jewish name."

Did you sense his alleged prejudices over the years?
"Never"

Were you surprised by the recent publications?
"Very. I'm not the only one – everyone was surprised. I heard about it that same Thursday, but there was no talk of anti-Semitism at the time. The cops weren't handling it as a case of anti-Semitism."

So what were they investigating?
"An argument between people, like people fight in a bar."

Strange, there have been anti-Semitic quotes in the press.
"Yes, that's the complaint the woman filed."

And you still believe he never made such comments.
"Yes"

In your experience, what kind of a person is he?
"He's polite, courteous, very human. His collections have always been about tolerance, openness, love and mutual respect. He even did a show inspired by the homeless to remind us of the creativity of those struggling to make it with little financial means."

Stephane also refused to comment on Galliano's whereabouts for "his own good" and believes the video of his client was staged.
