Yes! Obama Calls Defense Of Marriage Act 'Unconstitutional'

barack obama calls doma unconstitutional

We're VERY happy to hear this!

The Justice Department has just announced that President Obama believes the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional, and he refuses to continue defending it.

Based on Obama's new stance on the act, his administration won't defend ongoing suits in two federal Appeal Courts relating to the act, and he'll "leave it to Congress to defend the law, known as DOMA, against those challenges."

For those unfamiliar, the DOMA law "allows states not to recognize same-sex marriages preformed in other states and provides a federal definition for 'marriage' that excludes same-sex couples."

Here's what Attorney General Eric Holder had to say about Obama's decision:

“After careful consideration, including a review of my recommendation, the president has concluded that, given a number of factors, including a documented history of discrimination, classifications based on sexual orientation should be subject to a more heightened standard of scrutiny.”

More from Holder about Obama's views on Section 3 of DOMA, which defines “spouse” as a member of the opposite sex:

“[Section 3 of DOMA] fails to meet that standard and is therefore unconstitutional. Given that conclusion, the president has instructed the department not to defend the statute in such cases. I fully concur with the president’s determination.”

The DOMA law has not been overturned by Obama's new stance on it, but it's a MAJOR step in the right direction.

Here's what Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese had to say about it:

“This is a monumental decision for the thousands of same-sex couples and their families who want nothing more than the same rights and dignity afforded to other married couples. As the president has stated previously, DOMA unfairly discriminates against Americans and we applaud him for fulfilling his oath to defend critical constitutional principles.”

Thank you, Obama! Next, let's get DOMA overturned!!!

Dear President Obama…THIS ROCKS!

new-hospital-visitation-policy-more-lgbt-friendly

Excellent! This is LONG overdue!

A new policy, implemented by President Barack Obama, went into effect yesterday that forces hospitals in Medicare and Medicaid to allow ALL patients to decide visitation rights, as well as who to entrust - regardless of sexuality or gender - with making medical decisions on their behalf!

Brian Bond, the White House Deputy Director of Public Engagement, writes:

"This policy impacts millions of LGBT Americans and their families. The President saw an injustice and felt very strongly about correcting this and has spoken about it often over the years."

HRC President Joe Solmonese responded to the news with:

"LGBT people experience discrimination in many aspects of their lives, but it is perhaps at its worst during times of crisis. We thank President Obama and HHS Secretary Sebelius for recognizing the hardships LGBT people face and taking this important step toward ensuring that no one will be turned away from a partner's hospital bedside again."

This truly is amazing news!

We're thrilled that Obama has taken these steps to ensure that ALL couples and families can legally be with their loved ones, and make the tough decisions if they have to - instead of being denied access to them!

The path to equal rights is still a long and difficult one, but successes like this make it all the more important that we remain adamant and continue to fight for what we deserve as human beings!

EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL!

Dear Arkansas, THIS Sucks!

arkansas-school-district-board-member-posts-horrific-anti-gay-rant-on-his-facebook-profile

This is absolutely disgusting.

Clint McCance, a board member of the Midland school district of Arkansas, has caused an uproar for posting a bigoted and hate-fueled anti-gay rant on his Facebook profile encouraging more "queers" and "fags" to commit suicide!

While people all over the country were wearing purple last week in support of LGBT, McCance chose to write the following message:

"Seriously they want me to wear purple because five queers killed themselves. The only way im wearin it for them is if they all commit suicide. I cant believe the people of this world have gotten this stupid. We are honoring the fact that they sinned and killed thereselves because of their sin. REALLY PEOPLE."

Worse yet, he received positive feedback from various people!

However, when one commented "Because hatred is always right," McCance responded:

"No because being a fag doesn't give you the right to ruin the rest of our lives. If you get easily offended by being called a fag then dont tell anyone you are a fag. Keep that shit to yourself. I dont care how people decide to live their lives. They dont bother me if they keep it to thereselves. It pisses me off though that we make a special purple fag day for them. I like that fags cant procreate. I also enjoy the fact that they often give each other aids and die. If you arent against it, you might as well be for it."

He also responded to another comment:

"I would disown my kids they were gay. They will not be welcome at my home or in my vicinity. I will absolutely run them off. Of course my kids will know better. My kids will have solid christian beliefs. See it infects everyone."

Completely sickening.

We'll refrain from responding to any of the nonsense written in his comments, because it's nothing but hateful garbage with no rhyme, reason, or logical thought behind it. We see no "solid christian beliefs" anywhere near that kind of thought-process.

And this is someone who participates in actively oversees what kind of education the youth of his area have!

HRC President Joe Solmonese issued the following statement on the matter:

"Clint McCance has put a face on the hate that devastates our young people. McCance shouldn't be allowed near children, let alone managing their education. We call for his immediate resignation from the school board."

Agreed 100%!

Enough young people have lost their lives because of this kind of toxic and mindless hate!

We hope that administrators in his school district realize the severity of his comments and take proper action to rectify the already damaging situation.

Target Helps Fund Anti-Gay Candidate For MN's Governor, Refuses To Make It Right!

target_logojb.jpg

So unfortunate!!

The Target Corporation came under fire recently for, along with Best Buy, contributing $150,000 to MN Forward, an organization that has given quite a bit of money to Tom Emmer, the candidate for governor in Minnesota who believes in strict anti-gay policies!

In an even more deplorable move, Target recently announced that they stood by their decision and will make no corrective efforts to rectify the situation!

The Human Rights Campaign's Joe Solmonese says in a statement:

“All fair-minded Americans will now rightly question Target’s commitment to equality. If their initial contribution was a slap in the face, their refusal to make it right is a punch in the gut and that’s not something that we will soon forget. However, with full marriage equality hanging in the balance in Minnesota, regardless of Target, it’s important that we as a community send a message that we will work tirelessly to elect pro-equality candidates.

“Target and Best Buy have – and no doubt will continue to have – model employment policies for LGBT people. We will continue to support those efforts. But before they can regain that exalted status among their consumers, they need to make things right in Minnesota. The nation’s LGBT community has shown these two companies enormous customer loyalty. Now it’s time for that faithfulness to be returned.”

Agreed! Absolutely shameful!

Not to mention that to give that kind of money to an organization that blatantly ostracizes a portion of their consumer base is STOOPID!

Hopefully Best Buy will not follow suit! And there's still time to make it right, Target!

EQUALITY for all!
