This breaks our hearts.

It's been reported that veteran television writer Tom Whedon died on Wednesday at the age of 83.

The Emmy-winning scribe and producer worked on shows like The Golden Girls, Captain Kangaroo, and The Electric Company.

Tom is also the father of talented writers — including Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon, who also wrote the screenplay for Toy Story and helmed several hit shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Firefly, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The New York native's father was screenwriter John Whedon, who wrote on The Donna Reed Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show — clearly, the Whedon family has a pretty talented gene pool.

On Friday, Tom's other son Jed Whedon — whose credits include Agends of S.H.I.E.L.D and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog — shared the news of his father's passing on Instagram, writing:

What an accomplished career.

It's always hard losing a loved one, but we're sure Tom's legacy will live on through the talents of his family.

The 38-year-old is having a BLAST (from the past) stepping back into the sinister role of Kathryn Merteuil for the highly-anticipated Cruel Intentions reboot!

But before SMG played the manipulative seductress in the 1999 teen drama, she played an ass-kicking vampire hunter in Buffy The Vampire Slayer!

To celebrate the premiere of Joss Whedon's cult classic — which made its TV debut 19 years ago tonight — the actress shared an adorable throwback pic of her in her breakout role!

Joss Whedon fans, unite — because the trailer for Con Man dropped, in all its meta glory!

This crowdfunded comedy webseries stars Firefly alum Alan Tudyk as Wray Nerely, former star of massively popular canceled sci-fi series Spectrum.

The show within the show was prematurely cancelled and has become a cult classic, generating a HUGE fanbase (hmmm, sound familiar?)

While Wray's friend and old co-star Jack Moore (Nathan Fillion) saw movie star success after the show ended, Wray is merely trying to become more than just a figure at conventions and comic book stores living off of his past fame!

The show plans to feature many cameos from the Whedonverse, including Amy Acker, Sean Mager, Felicia Day, Seth Green, Summer Glau, Sean Astin, James Gunn, and of course Joss himself!

Check out the trailer (above) and go rent Con Man on Vimeo on September 30!

It's Somehow Been 12 Years Since Buffy The Vampire Slayer Went Off The Air — So What's The Cast Up To Today!?

no title

We cannot believe that it's been 12 years since Buffy the Vampire Slayer last aired.

In just a little over a decade, a few of the SciFi series' stars have gone on to be Hollywood royalty.

Joss Whedon, for instance, went from directing cult genre shows like Firefly and Dollhouse, to creating two of the highest-grossing films of ALL TIME with his Avengers franchise.

And we don't even need to tell you how successful Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, and David Boreanaz have been… they're household names!!!

Unfortunately, not everyone involved with the show that launched the vampire trend has been as lucky — in fact, Nicholas Brandon was just arrested for the third time this year on Saturday.

And while we wish him nothing but the best as he tries to get sober, we felt it was our duty to honor the show's anniversary with a look at what the cast is up to today!

So what're you waiting for!?

There were several theories on why director Joss Whedon deleted his Twitter account on Monday — just after his movie Avengers: Age Of Ultron's massive box office debut.

But the most widespread was that he was escaping violent threats from "fans" who found his movie offensive.

There certainly was a ton of evidence for that theory — some really awful stuff being thrown at him — but Whedon says those attacks did NOT drive him away!

He revealed:

Guardians Of The Galaxy Director James Gunn Defends Joss Whedon After Twitter Exit — And Has A Request For Fans

We don't know the exact reason Avengers Age Of Ultron director Joss Whedon deleted his Twitter account on Monday.

But one prevailing theory seems to be it's because of critics — not the ones who say superhero movies are a fad, but rather the ones that threaten violence.

[ Related: Where Does Avengers: Age Of Ultron Rank Among All The Marvel Movies? ]

Whether they think the movie was lame or that Joss is somehow a sexist all of a sudden, some "fans" were tweeting some pretty hateful stuff at the writer-director.

Well, James Gunn didn't take kindly to hearing that his fellow Marvel filmmaker was being harassed like this — or that Whedon's fans were hitting back!

In a long Facebook post, the Guardians Of The Galaxy director tried to promote a little compassion, writing:

Joss Whedon Quits Twitter After Huge Avengers: Age Of Ultron Debut! But What Drove Him Away??

Apparently more than a dozen superheroes in Avengers: Age Of Ultron was enough to handle, but 140 characters is just too much.

On the heels of the second-biggest opening weekend of all time — behind his own original Avengers movie — director Joss Whedon has unexpectedly deleted his Twitter account.

The prolific tweeter gave no reason, he simply signed off for good after one final message to fans:
