ESPN’s Erin Andrews Reebok Controversy

ESPN sportscaster Erin Andrews’ journalistic integrity is being called into question.

A couple weeks before she signed on to promote Reebok’s ZigTech line, she reported, "Texas Christian players were slipping in their new Nike cleats during the Rose Bowl." Some people are wondering if she used her position at ESPN to pre-emptively put down Nike and indirectly promote Reebok.

Wrote the New York Times:

“[E]xperts in journalism ethics and others are raising questions about whether her comments — given that the deal may have been in negotiation — constituted a conflict of interest, and whether any journalist should endorse a commercial product.”

ESPN responded by stating, “ESPN has said that Andrews rarely covers stories involving shoes, and that if she did, she would disclose her affiliation with Reebok.”

While her comments about Nike shouldn’t be cause for too much concern, she should make sure to be careful in the future about what she says about shoes!!
