Junior Seau's Family To Donate His Brain To Science

When Junior Seau tragically committed suicide, he shot himself in the chest.

Usually, suicide by gunshot is a self-inflicted wound to the head, but Junior did it in the chest. Was it so his brain could be studied afterwards? Possibly.

His family is planning to donate his brain to science, hopefully so researchers can learn more about the possible link between multiple blows to the head and depression/dementia.

Jacopo Annese, director of the University of California at San Diego's Brain Observatory, said:

"However ghoulish it may appear to the majority of the public, the work that is conducted postmortem is essential to validate this hypothesis, because the important clues are at the cellular-level, and we can't see these with MRI, but we can with our microscopes.

Searching for the link between traumatic injury and more subtle and insidious effects like depression, suicide and dementia has been particularly crucial in the world of sports, where unprecedented body mass and acceleration create the scenario for severe trauma if there is a collision."

Junior's sad story sounds remarkably similar to Dave Duerson's, another ex-football player. Dave committed suicide with a gunshot wound to the chest specifically so his brain could be studied afterwards.

Annese continued:

"What happened to Junior Seau is terribly sad. The least us scientists can do is to match his dedication to his sport and his community with our own dedication to research, finding the reasons for such tragedy, so that it does not have to happen again."

The average life expectancy of a retired football player is 58. That's crazy compared to the average of a normal American man at 75.

We really hope they can find a link between head injuries and depression. Then the NFL will have to take even more precautions when it comes to player injuries.

Junior Seau apparently struggled with a problem many former pro athletes have — an inability to adjust to a life out of the spotlight.

The Last Photo Of Junior Seau Alive?

This is so sad.

This photo (above) is possibly one of the last photos of Junior Seau before his tragic death.

It was taken on April 30th, just two days before his alleged suicide.

He was at a kids' charity event called '9-1-1 For Kids' where they teach kids how to properly communicate with 9-1-1 operators, specifically for emergency calls only.

The event was at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point.

Junior was there, joking around and even had drank a few shots of tequila with Karma Tequila Co-Founder Gary Eisenberger.

Gary said Junior was the most jovial and happy person out of all the celebrities at the event.

We didn't think we could feel any worse about this but we do. This is so sad.

His family and friends are in our hearts and thoughts.

Junior Seau's Family And Former Coach Speak Out On His Suicide

As we previously mentioned, Junior Seau, 43-year-old ex-pro football star, has killed himself.

It's a possibility that his death could be a result of the numerous head injuries a professional football player receives throughout his career.

Even though all of this has just recently come to light, his mother and former coach have already spoken out about the suicide.

His mother talks about her son in a heart-wrenching press conference (above) and his former coach, Norv Turner, from when he played for the Chargers, said:

"I have no words to describe the passing of Junior Seau. It is a sad, sad day for not only me, but for the whole sports community. I worked with Junior here and later in Miami. I can tell you no one had more character and true leadership ability than Junior. He brought passion to the game of football that was unmatched. His commitment to charitable causes in the community was inspiring. It was an honor to know him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Not only was Junior a sports star, he was a philanthropist. He started the Junior Seau Foundation back in 1992.

It was a great program that would "educate and empower young people through the support of child abuse prevention, drug and alcohol awareness, recreational opportunities, anti-juvenile delinquency efforts and complimentary educational programs."

So sad to see such a young man's flame snuffed out so suddenly.
