Keith Olbermann Opens Up About Leaving MSNBC And Joining Current TV

Filed under: TV NewsMedia MinuteBusiness Blitz

keith olbermann on leaving msnbc and joining current tv

Now that Keith Olbermann has his new show Countdown and is bringing together his contributors, he seems to be in a pret-ty secure position, and has finally decided to open up about leaving MSNBC and joining Current TV

Here are a couple of the reasons that Olbermann gives for joining Current TV:

- He got a pay raise from $7 million to $10 million/year
- He has has been named chief news officer for Current TV, and has been given an equity stake in the network

And here's more from Olbermann on his move from MSNBC to Current TV:

"It's been fascinating, to see the assumption that this is some sort of bizarre move for me. I have achieved what I wanted to achieve. I'm better off at some sort of independent place where they not only like what I produce but also trust me to be the one to produce it."

And here's Olbermann on how he got into MAJOR TROUBLE at NBC by gossiping about Jeff Zucker during the Comcast merger:

"There was a lot of speculation about what would happen. One surprisingly accurate bit of speculation on every floor of the building was, 'I betcha they don't keep Jeff.' And apparently he heard that I had said this. I was there and I was a convenient punching bag and everybody would believe everything they said about me. And so off I went."

Sorry to hear about the drama, but def sounds like Keith's move from MSNBC to Current TV was a positive one in quite a few ways. More money, more power, AND more creative freedom? Sounds good to us!

What do U think about Keith's reasons for moving to Current TV after MSNBC? Would U do the same thing?

Michael Moore To Be A Contributor On Olbermann's New Countdown TV Show

michael-moore-keith-olbermann-conributor.jpg

Oooh! Controversial!

Keith Olbermann has asked Michael Moore to act as a contributor on his upcoming new show for Current TV. It isn't such a big surprise since Michael was a frequent guest on Olbermann’s MSNBC show, but considering Michael's recent criticism of the Obama administration's decision to kill Osama bin Laden, his appearance might generate a more negative reaction than Keith would've liked for the show just starting out.

But Michael isn't the only contributor to the show. Additionally, Keith has asked comedian Richard Lewis documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas and Nicole D. Lamoureux, executive director of the National Association Of Free Clinics, to be regular contributors to the new Countdown.

Don't think they'll stir the pot as much as Michael, but we shall see!

Thoughts on Keith's decision to include Michael on his panel???

Olbermann Having Trouble Finding People To OlberMANN His Team

Olbermann Struggling To Staff UP

Keith Olbermann isn't necessarily the easiest dude to work with, we hear. And we fear that it's that idea that is keeping him from quickly staffing his new show.

Countdown has been notoriously hard to fill for Keith, to the point where he's trying to poach people from MSNBC to come work from him.

A source had this to say about that:

"Everyone is laughing. They would never leave the network to work for him."

He offended a lot of people when he left. Yet, someone affiliated with his new show is singing a different tune:

"Keith is also assembling a first class team and that's going nicely too. We have already hired three former "Countdown" staffers and others from MSNBC. We are announcing the EP shortly."

We're more inclined to believe the first quote, mainly because it has taken him forever to staff up. This is why you don't burn bridges, Keith!

Olbermann To Go To Current TV?

Olbermann Perhaps On Current TV

It’s being speculated that Keith Olbermann, who used to be the top rated host on MSNBC, will be taking his views to a new show of his own on Current TV. The announcement is supposed to come today!

Current TV reaches fewer people than his previous home, but we think it’ll be a good fit to have some control over his own material. The channel itself will be obvious as to it’s liberal swing, and is partially owned by the Inventor of the Internet Al Gore himself.

Here’s a bit on the channel itself:

“The channel may be betting on Mr. Olbermann to put it on the cable map. The low-rated five-year-old channel needs the help. Targeting young people, it originally subsisted on YouTube-style submissions and video journalists. More recently it started producing and acquiring traditional television series, like repeats of “This American Life.”

Olbermann dropped MSNBC after some disagreements, but it could have been that he had this lined up anyway! Some think he could have been urged out by Comcast, who just bought NBC. Either way, it was abrupt, and something unusual went down.

Everyone's being tightlipped on everything, so we'll just have to find out later!

Well, Keith, bb, we wish you good luck no matter where U go!

Will U watch Keith on his new home, wherever that may be??

More Deets On Aaron Sorkin's Cable TV Show

aaron-sorkins-hbo-cable-tv-show-details.jpg

As we mentioned earlier this week, Aaron Sorkin's working on TV show about and now there's more deets!

The screenwriter said in an interview with BBC:

"I love television, and I’m going to be doing another television series as well, this time on HBO, and it’s going to take place behind-the-scenes at a nightly cable news show. It’s going to be happening soon. I’ve written the pilot episode and we’re casting it right now."

As for research, Sorkin's gone straight to the source, adding:

"I’ve spent some time at CNN…with Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews, Fox News, I’ve spent some time being a fly on the wall at those shows…What the hope is, is that I can bring the same kind of idealism and romanticism that made government seem sexy on The West Wing, and I can bring it to the news and journalism, which in America is held in at least as much contempt as government."

MSNBC Sees Spike In Ratings For First Night Without Keith Olbermann

keith-msnbc-ratings.jpg

The numbers are in and it looks like MSNBC didn’t suffer in the ratings on its first night without Keith Olbermann.

An average of 1.5 million viewers tuned in to watch Lawrence O’Donnell take over Keith’s timeslot, which was up a little under 50 percent from Olbermann’s average number in that hour.

Right now, we assume MSNBC execs are feeling pretty good about their decision. Will they still feel so prideful, though, if the numbers plummet next week, when the initial novelty of having a new commentator wears off?

We shall see!
