This is AWFUL!
An entire hockey team from Russia's Kontinental Hockey League club may have lost their lives in a tragic plane crash.
Sources say the accident near the city of Yaroslavl in Central Russia has claimed the lives of at least 43 people, the majority of which belonged to the KHL's Lokomotiv.
A spokesman for the team told American newspapers, "We have no team anymore." He went on to say their entire starting line-up was on board at the time of the crash.
The loss is being felt here too, since a few of the confirmed dead played several seasons in the NHL. Commissioner Gary Bettman of the National Hockey League sent his condolences, saying:
"Though it occurred thousands of miles away from our home arenas, this tragedy represents a catastrophic loss to the hockey world — including the NHL family, which lost so many fathers, sons, teammates and friends who at one time excelled in our League. Our deepest condolences go to the families and loved ones of all who perished."
According to Russian officials, the plane crashed immediately after taking off from an airport near the city on the Volga River, which is approximately 150 miles northeast of Moscow.
This news breaks our heart and we wish the friends and families of those affected the best as they deal with the terrible, terrible circumstances.
