There is a lot of planning and plotting that goes into making and releasing a movie. Producers and marketers have to consider who will be the best marketable star and when the film will bring in the most money.
Someone over at FOX neglected to check the numbers when deciding to hire Tom Cruise for Knight and Day and someone else picked the WORST time imaginable to release it.
The thing is, according to studies, people don't actually really like Tom. Sure, he's mildly amusing as that Les Grossman guy and yes, back in the day, he was endearing in his tighty whities. But let's get real - ever since he started jumping on couches all crazy-like, people are not down with Suri's dad.
The studio is just realizing this now and is scrambling to adjust their marketing strategy to show less of Cruise's face, hoping that will trick audiences into seeing the flick, despite their dislike of him. (Notice how you can't really see him in the movie poster?)
Good luck with that!
The other issue the studio faces is when the hell to release the film. It's original date was slated for this Friday, but was bumped up to Wednesday, hoping to snag some more $$$ before The Grown-Ups releases, the flick's main competition. But insiders are realizing now that it won't really matter which day they release it, as the flick is sandwiched in-between two box-office heavy hitters: Toy Story 3, which took over $100 million this past weekend and is slated to do about $50 million more this coming weekend and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which opens next week.
Do we smell a bomb for Tom? Most likely, which is kind of sad as those of you have seen actually say it is a decent flick, despite Tom's lack of likability.
Tough break!
