A new National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report states that African Americans and Hispanics are the ethnic groups most affected by HIV.
African Americans account for 44% of the 48,100 new HIV cases diagnosed in 2009, while Hispanics account for 20% of the new HIV cases, but respectively, each ethnic group only accounts for 14% and 16% of the U.S. population.
Regardless of race, the study points out that gay men remain the population most heavily affected by HIV in the United States.

Shakira, an advocate of investing in Latino education, got her chance to to speak with government officials on the issue during a meeting of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics Commission.
That platform also gave her the opportunity to plead her case to millions of Americans on behalf of the fastest-growing group of Americans who have more children living in poverty than ANY OTHER ethnic group.
In an editorial authored by the Colombian pop star on the White House blog, Shakira argues "the only road out of poverty is education."
