LimeWire Agrees To Pay Record Labels $105 Million To End Suit

And thus, the days of LimeWire are officially at an end.

This afternoon, the owners of LimeWire, the highly frequented free file sharing application that aided thousands of us to download music illegally, agreed to pay 13 record companies a hefty sum to end their long-standing lawsuit and trial.

The labels, which include Arista, Atlantic, BMG Music, Capitol, Elektra, Interscope, Laface, Motown, Priority, Sony BMG, UMG, Virgin and Warner Brothers, will be paid $105 million in copyright infringement damages.

That's a lot of money…but then again, does anyone else feel like they owe them all much more than that? In the grand scheme of things, we imagined that number being way higher based upon the sheer volume of music we assume is downloaded per day.

Inneresting.

Music Piracy Down After Limewire Shutdown

LimeWire Shutdown Leads To Drop In Piracy

After the shutdown of the popular P2P music/file sharing program Limewire, the NPD Group is reporting a drop in overall piracy going on!

Here are some deets:

Filesharing activity fell from 12% of U.S. Internet users in the third quarter of last year-the last quarter the service was active-to 9% in the fourth quarter after the service was shut down.

NPD estimates that's 12 million more people downloading music illegally then there are today. In that same time, NPD says the average number of music files downloaded from P2P services fell from 35 tracks per user to 18.

Just the announcement of the impending lawsuit against the program caused users to abandon the ship, dropping the amount from 56% to 32%. Quite the fall!

As you'd expect, this wasn't the only way to get illegal music out there, so NPD will be watching to see if other ways spike in activity.

Limewire had been around for so long that its shut down has had a huge effect!

Pret-ty inneresting!

R.I.P Limewire

limewire shuts down

Looks like music pirates aka practically everyone will have to find another P2P site to download their music from!

After a ten year run, Limewire has joined the P2P Cemetery, along with old-school Napster, Kazaa, and many others.

Today, Limewire will follow its court-ordered injunction, and they'll start the process of disabling their file-sharing and music-searching features.

The company behind Limewire, LimeCompany, will move forward in some way, shape, or form, most likely in the form of a music store or a streaming music service.

Congrats to the music industry for another victory! This is definitely a big one.

Will U mourn Limewire's demise?
