We're gathered here today to say goodbye to a very dear friend that never really had a chance.
Friendster began with earnest hopes of becoming a place where friends could come to connect, share photos, and maybe even a few laughs while commenting on each others profiles.
However, like so many other social networking websites, it spent most of its life in the shadows of giants like Myspace, Facebook, and of course, LinkedIn.
Although never reaching the social networking peaks that its successors have, Friendster will always be what they can never be again. A pioneer.
The website claimed the name of "social networking website of choice" for many in 2003, but unfortunately, couldn't keep users from signing off and signing on to competing networks as time marched on.
While its life on the internet was tragically cut short, we'll always remember Friendster as the little website the could have, maybe would have, and probably should have, but never quite did take off.
As the website deletes all users profiles and accounts by May 31st to prepare for its next life as "the social gaming destination of choice", we ask that everyone take a moment of silence to remember the website that may have started it all.
R.I.P. Friendster! You will be missed.
