Much to Russell Crowe's dismay, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law on Sunday that prevents local governments from banning the male circumcision.
The debate arose about a year ago after a San Francisco Bay Area advocacy group, led by a man named Lloyd Schofield, sought to make the medical procedure punishiable by jail time or a $1,000 fine!
The movement gained a famous ally when Crowe, the Oscar-winning star of Gladiator, chimed in with tweets last June, reading:
"Circumcision is barbaric and stupid. Who are you to correct nature? Is it real that God requires a donation of foreskin? Babies are perfect."
The new bill, effective immediately, shoots down any hopes to end circumcision by prohibiting governments at the local or county level from "restricting the practice of male circumcision". Furthermore, it "declares that the laws affecting male circumcision must have uniform application throughout the state."
So if people want to end this "barbaric" practice, they need to convince the entire state of California.
Based on comments on the subject in the past, this issue is VERY debatable and both parties presenting notable arguments.
That being said, we think parents should educate themselves on the topic and make an informed decision, one way or the other.
