Nick Cannon Reveals Kidney Problems Were Part Of Autoimmune Disease

Nick Cannon autoimmune disease

Oh no! We're so sorry to hear about Nick Cannon's recent health problems. Although he's got them under control now, it sounds like he'll be dealing with issues for the rest of his life.

While DJing at an event in NYC on Wednesday, the television personality revealed that his kidney condition was the result of an "autoimmune disease that [doctors] found" in his system and it won't be going away, continuing:

"They kind of say [my] autoimmune [disease] is – like a lupus type of thing, but no one else in my family has it."

The autoimmune disease caused the kidney failure, which then produced ANOTHER health scare when he was rushed to the hospital a few weeks ago because of a blood clot in his lungs. Nick described the experience as one of "the scariest" things that has ever happened to him, saying:

"The blood clot thing was probably the scariest because … I've known people who have passed away from that. I thought I was getting better and then that happened, so that kind of came out of nowhere."

Since being diagnosed with his health problems, Nick has had to stop hosting his radio show and is actively trying to get more sleep every night. No matter what inconveniences arise from his condition, however, Nick just feels "blessed to be alive."

Toni Braxton Refused To Tell Debt Collectors She Had Lupus

Sad. We can understand being prideful, but not when it puts you in this much trouble.

Just a few months ago,Toni Braxton was in the red for millions upon millions of dollars and debt collectors were hammering down on her door, attempting to get some answers and their money. Her problems began when she cancelled a series of Las Vegas shows she was slated to perform without really giving a reason. However, yesterday on The Wendy Williams Show, Toni revealed that her battle with lupus kept her from doing the shows and her pride kept her from sharing that information with the creditors. She explained to Wendy:

"When you file bankruptcy the bank can take everything… Before I filed… I tried to work out a deal with everyone. No one wanted to work out a deal. They said, 'It was 2008 when the market crashed, or whatever.' They were like, 'Oh, she can work.' But I didn't want to tell people I had lupus…What happened was, the first one was a business bankruptcy. But, because I secured everything personally, I had to file. People don't understand the bankruptcy is for protection."

Such a tough situation to be in, but one, according to Toni, that has finally started to resolve itself. According to Toni, at present, she owes $500K to the banks, which is certainly more manageable than the $50 million she was rumored to owe.

But for right now, sweetie, we think it is more important that you continue to take care of yourself. The money stuff will be sorted out when you are feeling better. Just remember that your health is the most important thing!

Chin up!

FDA Approves New Lupus Treatment

FDA approves Lupus treatment

The Federal Drug Administration has approved the first new drug to treat lupus in more than half a century.

Benlysta was approved on Wednesday to offer people with the often debilitating immune system disease a new option of treatment since the only drugs approved to treat lupus are aspirin, approved in 1948, Plaquenil, a malaria drug, and corticosteroids.

Although passed by an advisory committee 13-2 back in November, the results of this new drug are marginal at best.

The drug wasn't tested on those with severe cases of the disease and according to data from the clinical trials, about 11 patients must be treated for just 1 to benefit.

Unfortunately, African-Americans, who have a higher incidence of the disease, did not seem to respond to treatment with Benlysta.

However, since too few of them participated in the trial to draw definitive conclusions, the company behind the drug has agreed to do another study to assess the effectiveness and safety of the drug in people of African descent.

The new treatment, developed by the company Human Genome Sciences, is estimated to cost about $35,000 a year, so let's hope despite the marginal testing results, it really helps some people!

FDA Panel Approves First New Lupus Treatment In 50 Years!

First new lupus treatment in 50 years

After hearing from over 30 lupus patients, Food and Drug Administration advisers have approved the first new lupus treatment in over 50 years!

The FDA panel voted 13-2 in favor of a new drug, known as Benlysta, designed to treat flare-ups and pain caused by lupus, a little-understood and potentially fatal ailment in which the body attacks its own tissue and organs.

The FDA is not required to follow the advice of panels, but it usually does and is scheduled to make a decision on the new drug by Dec. 9.

Panelists like Dr. David Blumenthal of Case Western Reserve University, who voted against the new treatments approval, did not feel the studies submitted showed the drug was more effective than older treatments, saying:

“I know my lupus patients want a medicine that is more effective, but I have not seen data that says this drug is it”

Why such a negative nancy? Well for starters, the drug does not help African-Americans, who are three times more likely to have lupus than Caucasions! Secondly, only 30% of patients studied responded to the drug!

The big selling point seemed to be the testimonies from lupus patients who urged the FDA to approve the drug because current treatment’s side effects are more debilitating than the disease itself.

We're not experts, but if it helps a few, it sounds like it's worth it. Do U think the FDA should approve the drug?
