Science: Alpha Male Baboons Are Depressed And Stressed

stressed baboon

Being on top is srsly stressful!

A recent report on five troops of wild baboons in Kenya studied over nine years found that alpha males showed very high stress levels, as high as those of the lowest-ranking males.

The stress, they suggested, was probably because of the demands of fighting off challengers and guarding access to fertile females. Mo'money mo'problems, right?

Beta males, who fought less and had considerably less mate guarding to do, had much lower stress levels. They had fewer mating opportunities than the alphas, but they did get some mating in, more than any lower-ranking males.

After all, when the alpha gets in another baboon bar fight, who’s going to take the girl home?

What we learned here: being lazy makes you happy!

Flying Bear Kills Two People In Car Accident

Crazy / Sad!

A 300-pound male black bear wandered onto a road and was struck by an eastbound Pontiac Sunfire.

The impact sent the animal hurtling through the air, where it smashed the windshield of a westbound Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicle and went out through the back window, regional police spokesman said.

The SUV's 35-year-old female driver and a 40-year-old man sitting behind her were killed; a 28-year-old front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries, Fournel said.

In the Pontiac, neither the driver, a 23-year-old man, nor his 19-year-old male passenger was hurt.

Authorities say everyone needs to be careful while driving during bear mating season.

Can Male Flies Get Too Sexy?

Sexy Fly

Is there such thing as too sexy?

Researchers from the University of Queensland in Australia have proven it's possible.

The researchers engineered a population of male Drosophila serrata flies to release excess amounts of a combination of pheromones that female flies find super sexy.

Then, through a process of selective breeding, they studied the descendants of the supercharged males.

The study found that while sexual attractiveness in male fruit flies increased over generations, after seven generations the females stop mating with them.

Meaning - there is a biological cost to being too attractive.

Although male sexual traits are often obvious in animals, like the bright colors of a peacock tail and the mane of a lion, an overabundance of sexuality may not be a good thing.

What can human's take from this? One researcher says -

"that very attractive individuals may well have something wrong with them — they may not be as good as they seem to be at first glance.”

We're still not ready to feel bad for Brad Pitt.

London's Natural History Museum Is Getting Wild

Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & TrueWildlife

Animal sex exhibit

For those in the London area still struggling to find the perfect date for Valentine's Day, maybe consider showing your loved one some wild sex at the Natural History Museum!

It's not as dirty as it sounds, we're talking about animal sex!

And it's not as dirty as that sounds either…

"Sexual Nature" at the London Natural History Museum explores the diverse ways in which animals have evolved to procreate, such as a snail's love darts, the detachable penis of the paper nautilus, or the outsized testes of the promiscuous chimp.

Sounds fascinating! We're curious to learn how a detachable penis comes in handy.

The exhibition, which asks visitors "to leave their preconceptions at the door", opens this Friday.

Anyone is welcome on one condition, as Tate Greenhalgh says:

"We ask people to be open-minded when looking at potentially surprising, maybe shocking things that animals do that would be outlawed in human society."

And no giggling when you're greeted by a video projection of bonobo apes having sex — sometimes with a baby clinging on the back, or midway through munching a pineapple.

While we can't promise a few chuckles won't escape, we think this sounds like an exciting and educational exhibit that we hope comes to a museum in the United States in the future.

Polar Bear Mates Flirt

This is too funny!

Watch this video of male and female polar bears "flirting".

The male just lays there while the female strikes a pose and flaunts her goods to him.

In fact, he doesn't even get interested until she practically bends over in front of him.

Hmmm…this sounds familiar!

Don't worry though, ladies, this polar bear still plays hard to get even after she arouses her lazy mate.
