Sad…
Last weekend, the Smithsonian National Zoo's resident panda, Mei Xiang, welcomed her second panda babe into the world.
But unfortunately, this little one was not able to survive a week later and has passed away Sunday.
Zookeepers found the dead panda next to mama Mei, who was vocalizing her distress. The staff tried to perform CPR to no avail.
The National Zoo had high hopes for the baby as Mei Xiang was described as the perfect panda mom. The newborn was Mei's first since Tai Shan in 2005.

Congratulations Mei Xiang!!!!!
The Smithsonian National Zoo got a BIG suprise this weekend as their resident giant panda gave birth to a cub.
Mei Xiang is now the proud mama of a healthy babe, after FIVE false pregnancies.
Mei's first cub, Tai Shan, gained rockstar acclaim before being returned to China. The National Zoo is required to return cubs birthed from their loaned pandas to their maiden country.
No one will be able to contact the babes for the next few months.
Not bad for a mama who was only given a 10 percent chance to breed!

False Alarm!
Earlier this summer the National Zoo said their female panda might be pregnant. But it looks like it was just gas.
It was poor Mei Xiang sixth false pregnancy in total.
Mei has been artificially inseminated each year since the year after her only cub, Tai Shan, was born in 2005.
The announcement means that the zoo probably will try only one more time for a panda pregnancy with Mei. If she does not become pregnant during next year’s cycle, she, and perhaps her mate, Tian Tian, are liable to be replaced, zoo officials have said.
