Naomi Still Believes The Fashion Industry Is Racist

After accepting her award at the 2010 British Fashion Awards, Naomi Campbell told London's The Evening Standard the fashion industry still needs more diversity when it comes to models.

The 40 year old supermodel explains:

"We're all aware that we need to introduce more women [of colour].

But what I've seen recently is that I've seen it go backwards slightly. We need to raise awareness again and need to start using women of colour more. When I look at the shows this season, there weren't as many as a year-and-a-half ago. We've got to keep speaking out, so as boring as it may be, if you hear me saying it over and over again I have to stand up for my fellow comrades.

It's not for myself, but the younger girls who come up to me and say, We didn't get used this season, we didn't do this, someone used 81 models and didn't use one of us.' In that respect if they come up and talk to me, and I'm able to speak on their behalf, then I will."

She has a point.

Model diversity at this past New York Fashion Week was up, but only slightly.

Hopefully designers are listening.

NYFW's Model Diversity Shows Slight Improvement

Once again, white models dominated the catwalks at New York Fashion Week, but not as much as last season.

An analysis has been compiled that says of the 4699 looks that walked down the runway 3686 or 78.4% were white, while back in February they made up 84% of the models.

The improvement may be slight, but at least it's something.

The stats also showed that only 25 shows out of the 144 that were put on didn't have any models of color.

Hopefully other designers will continue to celebrate diversity like Diane von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs and Gwen Stefani next season.
