So sad. Hopefully, this will give her a bit of closure.
After over 30 years of denial, Mo'Nique's brother has sat down in a one-on-one interview with Oprah Winfrey to admit that he sexually abused his sister and to apologize for it.
Gerald Imes first claims to Oprah that he was himself abused, which is what sent him into a downward spiral of drugs, alcohol and ultimately, abusing his younger sister. At the age of eleven, Gerald was already deep into cocaine and heroin and by the time he was 13, he began molesting Mo'Nique. She was only seven.
The abuse lasted four years, then Mo'Nique finally had the courage to tell her parents the truth. They were also in the audience of Oprah as their son shared his story and confessed that though they threw Gerald out initially, they welcomed him back into their home after only a month. Gerald was then later sentenced to 12 years in prison for molesting someone else.
Despite everything, Gerald only had one thing that he wanted to share - an apology to his sister. He said:
"I'm here today to acknowledge that I've been in denial for over 30 years. I just want to say I'm sorry."
Sometimes sorry just isn't enough.
Poor Mo'Nique. Girl should be proud to have stayed so strong for so many years. We're sure proud of you!
