The owner of the game park where Pete the Moose lived has taken responsibility for the cover-up that followed the death of Pete.
Pete was a moose who was adopted as a calf after his mother was attacked by dogs.
He was the catalyst in a debate in Vermont about the mixing of wild animals with elk kept on preserves.
Pete soon became a spokesman of sorts, and even got a page on Facebook.
Tragically, Pete died while sedated during a normal hoof trimming back in September.
But we didn't find out about it until a few days ago!
The Commissioner of the Fish and Wildlife Department said:
"I did talk to the Nelsons yesterday evening and expressed my frustration with what had happened, and I was happy that they decided to take ownership of the issue.
The whole issue of Pete the Moose has been such a lightning rod, my guess is they were just concerned about what would happen (if word got out about the death)."
The son of the preserve owner who was responsible for Pete, said:
"The blame goes to us. We're the ones that didn't say Pete died. We said we would take care of Pete, and then a few weeks later, geez, Pete died. And so we were mortified, and we said, `Oh, we'll just sit on this one.'"
C'mon guys, don't you know honesty is the best policy?
At least they've come clean so fans of Pete the Moose can properly mourn him.
