Such great news!
The Navy has just authorized it's Chaplains to perform same-sex marriages! Of course, this would come once the don't ask don't tell is lifted, but it is an amazing step in the meantime until that happens!
Some members of Congress argue the go-ahead violates another federal law, though! Boo!
Here's some of what the authorization says, and a little explanation:
"A chaplain may officiate a same-sex, civil marriage if it is conducted in accordance with a state that permits same-sex marriage or union. If the base is located in a state where same-sex marriage is legal, then base facilities may normally be used to celebrate the marriage."
"There's been no change in policy, the only change that occurred was in training. It (the memo) emphasizes repeatedly that chaplains will not be required to officiate same-sex weddings if it's contrary to the tenets of their faith."
That's awesome, but like we said, it's meeting opposition.
Here's what those Buzz Killingtons have to say about it:
"While a state may legalize same-sex marriage, federal property and federal employees, like Navy chaplains, should not be used to perform marriages that are not recognized by federal law. My colleagues and I are calling on the Secretary of the Navy to make sure that the Navy actually follows the law."
So let's just change the law!
Marriage should not be limited to just men and women, but instead should be all inclusive for every person! Marriage should be between love and love, regardless of sex!
It's time for change! This is the right direction, and we can't have those who irrationally fear love between any and all people set it back!
Equality for all!
