Colin Ferrell's son

Colin Farrell has revealed his 7-year-old son, James, has been diagnosed wih Angelman Syndrome.

AS is an uncurable neuro-genetic disorder characterized by intellectual and developmental delay with frequent laughter or smiling during a usually happy demeanor.

The actor opened up about his son's condition recently while appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show where he shared the doctor spotted the condition in part because of James' fascination with water, explaining:

"The doctor saw him one day and said, 'Is he always this happy … and does he always kind of flap his arms like that? And we said, 'Yes.' And he said, 'And how does he feel about water?' and we said, 'Oh, water's fascinating (to him).' He went, 'Has he been tested for Angelman Syndrome?' We didn't know what that was."

Those diagnosed with AS frequently flap their hands and love to be around water. According to Farrell, his son "is kind of obsessed with water." He continued to elaborate, saying:

"He's not a great swimmer but he just loves being close to it and in and around it. It's one of the characteristics of the condition that he has."

Although there is no cure for the condition yet, researchers say they are close to discovering it. For now, Farrell doesn't seem to have too many complaints, as he told Ellen:

"If James gets upset at home I can get a pot and put some water in it. It's really beautiful because water is such a pure element … there's something really profound about it."
