Have you ever heard on a okapi?!?!?! We sure haven't but we're madly in love with this little one!

Parents Zack and Betty welcomed this bundle of CUTEness in early January and the three week old is already 96 pounds!

There are only 100 okapis in captivity in the States, and they are currently listed as "Threatened" on the endangered species list.

This calf is the zoo's first birth of 2013 and we're sure the zoo will love having this new addition!

Congrats on the beautiful babe, Lowry Park!

83,000 Dead Fish In Arkansas

Dead fish in Arkansas

First it was the birds, now it's the fish!

What's going on in Arkansas?

On top of the thousands of birds that fell dead out of the sky on New Year's Eve, 83,000 drum fish were found belly up along a 20 mile stretch in the Arkansas river.

Officials say the fish and bird deaths are unrelated, but could be linked to the freakish weather that ended in Arkansas this week, which included thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Something smells fishy. We think it might be all the dead fish.

We hope whatever killed those fish doesn't affect any other organism swimming or drinking from those waters.

If you live in the area, we'd recommend drinking bottled water until officials get to the bottom of this mystery.

What To Include In A Pet First Aid Kit

essential pet first aid kit items

Looks like CNN and the Mother Nature Network (MNN) have got our pets' safety in mind for the New Year.

Here are some essential Pet First Aid Kit items, recommended by MNN's Morieka Johnson:

- Typical First Aid Kit items - Bandages, cotton balls, rubbing alcohol, gauze, cotton swabs, and adhesive tape

- Latex-free gloves - To help prevent infection

- Tweezers - For removing ticks

- Muzzle and leash - For emergency transport purposes

- Digital thermometer - Pick up a "fever" thermometer, which tracks higher temperatures, and try to get a rectal reading

- Activated charcoal - Helps prevent poison absorption, and can be used to induce vomiting (but consult a professional before use)

- Benadryl - For bug bites and bee stings

- Clean cloths - To absorb bleeding or to cover wounds

- Emergency phone list - Should include veterinarian #, as well as ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center hotline (1-888-426-4435)

- Cone of Shame (E-collar) - Prevents pets from licking or irritating wounds

Lots of great advice!

Accidents certainly do happen, so it's def worth it to be prepared!
