And 15 years after making headlines, ABC news has caught up with Elian Gonzalez for an exclusive interview talking about his life, the controversy when he was child and what he hopes to do now.
In 1999, Elian — 6-years-old at the time — was found off Florida's coast when the boat he was in with his mother was capsized. After this, Elian went to go live with his uncle in Miami, which caused quite a reaction from Cubans, as they felt he should be returned to his father in Cuba. Thus started a large custody discussion between U.S. and Cuba over where the boy should lawfully live.
In the interview Gonzalez mentions how he'd love to return to the United States, but only as a tourist to do things like attend a baseball game or visit Washington museums and talk to Americans. He goes on to express his gratitude for the American people through the experience he had by saying:
