6-Year-Old Talks Shark Attack On Today Show

So Brave!

First this six-year-old girl gets bitten by a shark, and now she's talking on national TV!

Lucy Mangum, from North Carolina, is recovering after she got bitten so severely by the shark last week that the doctors lost count of how many stitches she had to get.

The shark bit Lucy in just 18-inches of water.

The cuties says she forgives the animal for attacking her but said she definitely likes dolphins better. LOL! How cute is that??

Her parents say this has not deterred them from going back to the beach or Lucy from going back into the water.

New York Gets A State Dog

New York State dog Hopeful

New York State's official animal is the beaver (yep). Their official insect is the ladybug, fish is the brook trout and shell is the bay scallop.

However the state has yet to adopt an official dog… until now!

Thursday lawmakers introduced a bill that will give the state an official dog.

The first state to claim an official dog was Maryland with the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, flowed by Pennsylvania's Great Dane. North Carolina chose the Plott Hound as it was the only dog breed indigenous to the state. Other official state dogs also are indigenous to their state, including the Boston Terrier (Massachusetts) and the Alaskan Malamute (Alaska).

What is New York's official going to be?

The proposed breed is the Rescue dog!

Attention Hogs Cause Traffic Jam

CA attention hogs

OMG… which way is the market?

Five escaped pigs caused a traffic Jam in Durham, North Carolina, Wednesday.

Police rounded up the pigs, the biggest of which weighed about 60 pounds, and wrangled them into squad cars. Animal control officers brought a trailer and took the pigs to the Durham Animal Control Shelter.

An official reported some of the pigs had minor injuries, including road rash and sore legs, that are consistent with falling from a vehicle.

The piggies seem to be alright, but will still be checked out by a county or state veterinarian.

Police said the pigs didn't cause any wrecks but did prompt plenty of onlooker delays on both sides of interstate 40.

The pigs will be kept for 45 to 60 days, and if no one claims them, they'll be auctioned off.

The pig survived the interstate, we think they should be aloud to live!

Unknown Illness Shuts Down Animal Shelter

doggie Illness shuts down shelter

This is kinda scary…

The Caldwell County Animal Control shelter is temporarily closed to the public until an unknown K-9 illness affecting the dogs can be identified and treated.

Symptoms of the illness include drooling, neurological problems and seizures.

Sadly, eight dogs have already been severely infected and euthanized as a result, with 10 other dogs euthanized due to their proximity to the sick dogs.

"We are working closely with Dr's Dan and Beth Jones of Lenoir Veterinary Hospital to determine the cause of the illness. We have sent blood and spinal samples to the North Carolina state lab for testing and so far have confirmed that the disease is not rabies,"

said Greg Greene, Director of Caldwell County Animal Control.

The only good news: the illness does not appear to affect cats.

Man Saves Paralyzed Girl's Missing Dog

Paralyzed girl's dog rescued

Here's some happy news to warm your heart.

Heather Siebert lost the use of her body from the neck down after a paralyzing car accident last June and if it wasn't for one man's act of kindness, would have lost her dog and best friend Shorty.

Gregg Stokes was driving down a country road in North Carolina when he spotted the injured dog and immediately pulled over to help the animal.

Luckily, the animal wasn't severely injured and Gregg was able to take the animal home.

While asking around the community for the owner of the dog, he happened to bring it to Heather's former high school where everyone immediately recognized the dog.

Heather had just about given up hope and thought Shorty was gone for good when the kind stranger reunited her with the dog.

"When I'm having my bad days, my mom and dad just put Shorty on my bed and let him lay here with me," Heather told reporters after the reunion.

Her mother was appreciative of the stranger's act of kindness and overjoyed with their good fortune, saying:

"It just seems like every time something negative happens, there's something positive that brings a ray of sunshine back into our lives."

We're SO happy for the Seiberts and Shorty!

We wish Heather the best as she continues to live a full and happy life, even after such a tragic accident, with Shorty by her side.

Monkey Euthanized After Attack

Monkey euthanized after attack

We reported on a monkey attack in North Carolina yesterday, but are sad to report today he will be euthanized.

Officials from the North Carolina Zoo tranquilized the monkey, named Joe, and took the poor little guy to a vet where he will be put to sleep.

Joe bit and scratched Patricia Knight while she was watching the primate for the owner, whom had apparently been M.I.A., but is now speaking up.

Details have emerged that the monkey's owner John Stacey had raised Joe in captivity since he was 6-weeks-old and had recently left the monkey in his grandsons care.

However, his grandson then left the animal in Knight's care while he was looking for a new home.

John Stacey is not happy about the decision to put down Joe and believes his monkey is no danger to society. He told reporters:

"Joe is a peaceful loving animal. They have this blown out of proportion. He is not wild or dangerous–never been wild, born in captivity."

Aww! We want Joe to live too!

Officials fear the animal may have rabies since Patricia is the third person he has bitten and are unsure if a rabies vaccine would work on a monkey.

After he is put down, the state vet will perform a rabies test on the monkey and inform those bitten of the results.

Stacey seems sure that his monkey doesn't have any diseases and said:

"How would it be a shame if they put him to sleep and he didn't have anything? I know for a fact he doesn't."

It would be a shame! We wish there another way to find out if Joe has rabies than killing the animal.

What if the victims actually aggravated the animal prior to the attack? We think more of an investigation should be done before a deadly decision like this is reached.

Thoughts???

Monkey Attack!

Monkey attacks North Carolina woman

Monkeys are such cute little creatures!

EXCEPT when they attack you.

A North Carolina woman, Patricia Knight, was attacked by a male black-capped Capuchin monkey while watching him for his owner.

The woman was only supposed to care for the monkey for one day, but one day turned into four and the owner has yet to return.

While trying to change the animals water bowl, the primate got a little feisty and jumped over Patricia's head to escape, scratching and biting her in the process.

Patricia told reporters:

"Animals like this belong in the wild. You can't make them into humans and babies. Their instinct is finally going to kick in."

We couldn't agree more!

The worst part is she doesn't know when the owner is coming to take the monkey back, leading authorities to investigate if the animal is in compliance with animal control ordinances in the county.

The monkey is currently in Animal Control custody.
