Ghost Ship Warehouse Fire Update: Two Arrested On 36 Charges Of Involuntary Manslaughter

After the infamous Oakland Ghost Ship warehouse caught fire during a rave last December, killing 36 people, authorities were on the lookout for someone to blame.

It wasn't difficult to spot the negligence that helped the fire spread so quickly; footage of the EDM venue and art space showed just how cramped and full of flammable material the building was. One of the two exits had even been blocked off completely.

Then it came to light that the space did not have current permits from fire inspectors. Considering 25 people were living on the premises, this was completely unacceptable.

Now arrests have finally been made, as landlord Derek Almena and tenant Max Harris have each been charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter.

Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley told reporters:

"[Almena and Harris] knowingly created a fire trap with inadequate means of escape. They then filled that area with human beings and are now facing the consequences of their action."

We'll keep you up to date with the results of the trial, but it seems pretty cut-and-dry at the moment.

Do YOU agree these men should have to pay for the deaths??

Oakland Fire: New Video Surfaces Of Cramped Conditions As Death Toll Rises To At Least 24

We continue to learn more about the Oakland warehouse fire that took place on Friday night — and it is only getting worse as we follow up on reports.

As we know, the death toll was expected to rise sharply from the fire as first responders finally made their way into the building this morning, and it appears that the total number of dead may be even higher than expected.

According to a report in the New York Times, the death toll is currently at 24 people (up from nine victims as of yesterday), and yet first responders have still only searched somewhere around one-fifth of the entire building.

Not only that, but officials told the Times that they don't yet believe they are even close to where the fire started — and they expect many, many more bodies as they are able to search deeper into the structure.

Ugh.

And the building — an artistic, commune-type living and work space known as the Oakland Ghost Ship — is coming under controversy more and more for the allegedly un-permitted activities and construction that took place there in the past.

Now, though, we are getting a look at what these underground concerts and performances inside the building looked like, including a video from an earlier EDM performance that went down there in June.

The show, an Obscura Machina event that featured several different DJs, also hints at a crowded, cramped, and unusual space, as you can see in this video from June at the Ghost Ship (below):

Oakland Fire Ripped Through EDM Party That Did Not Have City Permits — Dozens Of People Are Still Missing As Officials Prepare For The Worst

This tragic story is still on our minds after breaking yesterday, and we are absolutely heartbroken for all the victims and their loved ones.

As you remember, a fire ripped through an EDM performance at a warehouse-type structure in Oakland on Friday night, killing at least nine people and trapping likely dozens more.

Now, officials have revealed that the event organizers would have needed special permits to hold the rave there — permits they apparently did not have.

To boot, Oakland's Mayor Libby Schaaf and Planning and Building Director Darin Ranelletti revealed at a press conference late yesterday evening that a complaint had been made recently about "unpermitted construction" taking place in the warehouse just a few weeks ago.

Officials were still investigating that claim as the fire broke out on Friday night.

The fear, of course, is that because the structure is so unique — and perhaps dangerous — it could have trapped far more people inside than what would happen in a typical fire of this type, and officials are already planning for the worst when it comes to search and recovery.

There's one (major) problem:
