Smoking Leads To 'More Aggressive' Prostate Cancer

Just another reason to quit, fellas!

A recent study, published in the American Medical Association, has found men with prostate cancer who smoke cigarettes at the time of their diagnosis are much more likely to die of the disease or experience a recurrence than nonsmokers.

Researchers followed 5,366 men found to have prostate cancer between 1986 and 2006 for about eight years. They concluded that smokers with the disease, compared with diagnosed non-smokers, were 61% more likely to die and 61% more likely to experience a recurrence.

So scary! Why is that cigarette still in your mouth!?

Stacey A. Kenfield, Sc.D., an epidemiologist at the Harvard School of Public Health who led the study, has determined that if you smoke, "you will have a more aggressive cancer."

Another prostate cancer specialist who was not involved in the study, but reviewed the findings, said:

"Data suggest[s] that smokers develop cancers that are more likely to kill them. Smoking is a key factor that determines how aggressive prostate cancer will be."

Some more alarming findings in the study suggested men who'd smoked a pack a day for 40 years — OR two packs a day for 20 years — were 82% more likely to lose their battle with prostate cancer than men who had never smoked.

Considering prostate cancer is the most prevalent cancer in men, with 1 out of 6 being diagnosed in their lifetime, this is HUGE news, but quitting NOW could dramatically increase your chances of survival if ever diagnosed.

Men who quit smoking a decade (or even less) before contracting prostate cancer were no more likely to die than men who never smoked at all!

It's your body, but we're just trying to remind you of all the benefits NOT inhaling carcinogen filled smoke into your lungs has to offer!

Pack-A-Day Smoking Rates Down

We’re finally becoming a nation of non-smokers!

A new report found that from 1965-2007, the prevalence of heavy smokers (people who smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day) among smokers dropped from 56% to 40%.

California has led the way in this movement and has seen greater results — less than 25% of smokers smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day.

Experts predict that this trend will continue, especially among young people.
