They weren't afraid of no sequels… until now!

When Ghostbusters hit theaters last month, executives at Sony were confident that a sequel to Paul Feig's all-female reboot would be inevitable.

But since the film was met with a lukewarm box office performance and just fair-to-middling reviews, the studio has kept quiet on if it was still launching a live-action Ghostbusters universe as planned.

As of August 7, the Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy led film earned just under $180 at the worldwide box office.

Misogynist Fans Are SO Upset Ghostbusters Is Getting Good Reviews, They Even Have A Conspiracy Theory To Explain It!

Get over yourselves!

Ever since Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot was announced, there's been WAY too much controversy over the female leads.

Once the first trailer dropped, out of the throngs of fans of the original confused about whether this was a remake or a reboot emerged a much more gross bit of fandom — misogynists slamming the movie for its "feminist agenda."

Ghostbusters Review Roundup — Funny Feminist Action Or Flimsy Fan Service??

no title

The new Ghostbusters surely ain't afraid of no ghosts… but should they be afraid of film critics??

After getting an unnecessary amount of flack from self-appointed protectors of the original film and misogynistic Internet trolls, the highly-anticipated Sony reboot is finally hitting theaters this weekend!

To the delight of its defenders, the Paul Feig comedy is scoring generally positive early reviews — but that's not to say the gender-swapped reboot didn't have any ghastly misfires.

Even the critics who praised the film's heavy laughs and action agreed it suffered the overbearing presence of the original 1984 film — and sacrificed good storytelling opportunity for fan service. (Way too many cameos!)

Some critics also noted that leads Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig didn't have the same magic as they did in past Feig collabs like Bridesmaids and Spy — but the presence of Leslie Jones and scene stealers Kate McKinnon and Chris Hemsworth made up for the lull in chemistry.

All in all, the reviews say audiences can expect a summer blockbuster full of spooky fun with a side of girl power — but maybe not much that's going to stick with you…

The Ghostbusters reboot has been getting a lot of backlash from fans, who — for one reason or another — think the film will tarnish the beloved franchise.

To celebrate the anniversary of the original film's 1984 premiere, the director shared an EPIC photo on Twitter featuring both the old and new casts of the ghostly comedy!

What's even better is that both casts will appear together on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday night! AH-Mazing!
