Dogs Have Special Paws To Help Them In The Snow

dogs-can-survive-the-cold-web.jpg

Have you ever wondered how dogs can run through snow without yelping like humans?

It's all in the feet!

Scientists in Japan has discovered the answer. In a study, dog paws were found to have very fatty tissue, which doesn't freeze as much as other tissue.

Coupled with arteries and veins that close together, the paws transfer heat to their venules and warms their entire body in the process.

The research shows that dogs can run in temps as low as -35 degrees Celsius!

Diva Dog Insists On Riding In a Helicopter

What a bitch! (JKZ!)

An afternoon hike turned into an figg'n overnight ordeal when a couple, whose 80-pound dog joined them for the trek, couldn’t make it back down the trail.

Officials said the dog, Baxter, a Labrador mix, suffered cuts to his paws from rocks on the trail at the Angeles National Forest. The walk became too hard and he grew too tired, forcing his owners to call police for help.

The couple couldn’t carry the dog themselves, so they waited OVERNIGHT — that's right, they slept in the forest — for help to arrive for their pooch!

On Sunday morning, a rescue helicopter arrived and had to completely shut down to calm the frightened dog enough to board. The couple and the dog were eventually airlifted to safety.

Wish we could be airlifted when we got tired!

Dog Survives Being Hit By A On The Highway

Here is an AMAZING pet story from Perezilicious reader, Sarah, who wrote:

I saw your story of the cat that jumped out of its owners window and
survived a fourteen story fall. I was impressed and happy to hear that the cat survived with only a broken leg. I wanted to share a similar story of my own. My brother and I adopted a dog In December and in March she had a horrible accident.

My dog, Pie, is very skiddish and while being walked my brother dropped her leash (the plastic retractable ones) and it scared her and she ran away. While he was at work I was out looking for Pie all day, luckily Pie had an identity chip in her and eventually we got a call from an emergency vet stating they had her.

After arriving at the Vets office, they informed me that a woman saw Pie and tried to help catch her and she got scared of them and ran onto a highway, jumped off the overpass and got hit by a car. The emergency vet thought that she had two broken legs, her front and back right paws. Pie could not walk after the accident she had to be carried everywhere, and she weighed well over 75 pounds.

After taking Pie to a specialist we found out she only had broken her front right paw and sprained her back leg. We were very lucky Pie survived her accident and I just wanted to share the story with you. Over a year later, Pie is still skiddish and afraid of cars but walks perfectly fine and is a very happy dog.

Thanks Sarah!

World's First Dog Fitted With Four Prosthetic Paws

AW!

We are pleased to introduce Nakio!

He is the first dog to be fitted with a complete set of bionic paws that work naturally to allow him to run, jump and even swim.

Nakio received the paws after his own were severely hurt from stepping into an ice puddle as a puppy. The prosthetics were designed and fitted in a pioneering procedure by Martin Kaufmann, founder of Orthopets.

France Sucks At Taking Care Of Hamsters

France Sucks At Taking Care Of Hamsters

Among other things….
(JK France!)

France was punished on Thursday for not taking proper care of its hamsters.

The Court of Justice in Luxembourg (the European Union’s highest court) ruled Thursday that France had failed to protect the last wild hamster species in Western Europe.

If France does not adjust its agricultural and urbanization policies sufficiently to protect it, the court said, the government will be subject to fines of as much as $24.6 million.

The Great Hamster (the most fabulous species of hamster) can grow up to 10 inches long, has a brown-and-white face, white paws and a black belly.

It is now Frances' job to preserve and protect the 800 remaining rodents.

KISS Guitarist Teaches Us Above Ground Dog Graves Are Legal

vinie

Here's an update on yesterday's craziest post.

Looks like former KISS guitarist Vincent Cusano will not face animal cruelty charges after officials found 4 dead dogs at the rocker's home in Tennessee this weekend.

A rep for the Pet Adoption Welfare Services (PAWS) says Vinnie had kept all 4 animals in above-ground plastic storage bins, clearly marked as graves with little memorials written on them. Even though it's really creepy it's totally within the law.

Vinnie's wife explained the dogs had been killed by another one of the family's 9 (yes n-i-n-e) still-living dogs.

PAWS will test all of his living pets for rabies.
