How Animals Predict Earthquakes

toad-predict-quake.jpg

Scientists believe animals may be able to sense when an earthquake is coming by sensing changes in ground water.

A researcher was studying toads in a lake in Italy when all of the toads suddenly evacuated the lake.

Days just before a major quake.

The researcher said:

"It was very dramatic. It went from 96 toads to almost zero over three days."

Animals that live in or near groundwater are very sensitive to any changes in its chemistry, so they might detect the changes in rocks before the "slip" and cause a quake.

When rocks are under impossibly high levels of stress, they release charged particles.

These particles can flow into surrounding rocks and eventually reach earths surface, converting air molecules into positive ions.

A doctor said:

"Positive airborne ions are known in the medical community to cause headaches and nausea in humans and to increase the level of serotonin, a stress hormone, in the blood of animals."

It's all very sciencey.

Scientists are trying to find a way to incorporate animal behavior into early warning systems.

Basically, if you see a hundred toads leave a pond all at once, you should go stand in a doorway, or get under a sturdy table or one of those other quake survival methods.

Columbia Records is reportedly concerned with Beyoncé, because her latest album, 4, isn't as commercial and radio-friendly as they'd like it to be, and she's refused to make any alterations or record new material!

And apparently, they think that the solution to rejuvenating her career is to reunite Destiny's Child!

Scientists Predicting What Songs Will Be Radio Hits Through Brain Responses!

scientists can predict songs success

Knowledge is power…and potentially profitable!

Scientists at Emory University are doing studies on teens listening to new tunes, and they've discovered brain responses that could help predict the commercial success of songs.

According to the scientists, "at the level of cells and synapses, teen-age brains simply find some songs more rewarding to hear, even when the listeners say they don't like the tunes on questionnaires and surveys." Fascinating!

Here's what neuro-economist Gregory Berns had to say about the study:

"The punch line is that brain responses correlated with units sold."

And here's what Stanford University marketing professor Baba Shiv had to say about it:

"This research shows that the brain activation is able to predict what music is going to become popular two or three years from now. We have to wake up to the notion that these instinctual brain functions can have predictive value."

Very cool! This could open up lots of new jobs that never existed before! Def Jam with their own in-house scientists? It's the future! LOLz.

What do U think about this? Will scientists become increasingly involved in predicting radio hits?
