Shocking Inhumane Treatment of Foals During Wild Horse Roundups

Filed under: Sad SadAnimal RightsHorsesAnimal Cruelty

SO CRUEL!

Can you imagine being chased by huge helicopters for miles with nowhere to hide, until you're too weak to run anymore?

According to this video, that is exactly how wild horses baby horse are captured.

Today, the ASPCA released a video documenting the inhumane treatment of young mustang foals during the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Triple B roundup currently underway in northeastern Nevada.

In these "round ups" groups of wild horses are chased for miles by government-contracted helicopters that cause a stampede.

Many little baby horses can keep up with her big horses and are taken from their families. Once captured the ASPCA says:

"These young, unweaned babies are separated from their mothers and forced to stand in the hot sun for up to seven hours without access to water.”

Sheryl Crow Sings To Save Horses

All she wants to do is save some horses!

Singer, songwriter, and sweet heart, Sheryl Crow is donating part of the profits from an upcoming concert in Wyoming to a wild horse protection group that is suing the government to try to stop a big mustang roundup in Nevada.

The Colorado-based Cloud Foundation will get a share of the gate from her show with Kid Rock (he's still alive?) at Cheyenne Frontier Days on July 22.

The Grammy Award winner who grew up in Missouri says she shares the foundation's dedication to the preservation of wild horses on public lands.

Truth Behind The Brooklyn Bridge Sea Monster

Sea Monster Found Under The Brooklyn Bridge!

Booo!

Yesterday, a sea monster was found under the Brooklyn Bridge.

We are very sad to report that sea monster found between the burrows was…. not actually a "sea monster".

Kim Durham, a rescue program director and biologist for the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation in Riverhead, N.Y., checked out the decomposing creature and knew right away what it was:

"We could tell it was an Atlantic sturgeon right away. They have bony plates all over their bodies. There's no mistaking a sturgeon."

Well, that's not as fun!

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a 1995 study found that there were about 9,500 juvenile Atlantic sturgeons in the Hudson River — so they're not even rare!

Whatever.

We still haven't given up on unicorns and mermaids!

Urgent Actions Called For At UN Biodiversity Meeting

united nations develops plan for nature preservation

The United Nations met in Japan to discuss biodiversity, and the end result of their meeting was a 10-year plan to preserve nature.

Here's what Jim Leape, director-general of WWF International had to say about the plan:

"This agreement reaffirms the fundamental need to conserve nature as the very foundation of our economy and our society."

More from Leape:

"Governments have sent a strong message that protecting the health of the planet has a place in international politics, and countries are ready to join forces to save life on Earth."

The goal for the 10-year plan will be to protect 17% of Earth's land surface, and 10% of oceans by 2020.

Some opposition to this plan includes complaints by conservation scientists who don't think that the plan is ambitious enough, and poor countries that claim they don't have resources necessary to achieve these goals.

Based on this plan, developed nations will have until 2012 to come up with plans to raise necessary funds to implement the 10 year preservation plan.

We're glad to see measures being taken to preserve nature! We hope this plan works out!

Young Duo Setting Great Example

OMG!

No, we're not just excited, that is the name of a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the preservation of endangered species founded by brother and sister team of Carter and Olivia.

What's more impressive than two children founding an animal protection organization? How about that both are under the age of ten (Carter is 9 while Olivia is 7)! Way to go you two!

It all began when they started adopting cheetahs in Africa. Soon they learned 1,000 other species were endangered and wanted to do something about it.

They've done some great things already, such as collecting supplies needed to help the seabirds and other animals caught up in the BP oil spill, raising funds to help pay for the security forces needed to protect the last remaining Black Rhinos, purchasing of materials to continue the efforts of the Ann Van Dyke Cheetah Center in South Africa, and funding the OMG Student Educational Outreach Program.

These two are a great example of what ALL of us can do! This has to be a team effort! The animals of the world have just as much right to be here as we do!

We're proud of you Carter and Olivia! Keep it up!
