Angelina Jolie's Aunt Debbie Loses Battle With Stage Four Breast Cancer

We can't even imagine how devastating this must be for her entire family.

While Angelina Jolie recently made the courageous decision to announce that she had a double mastectomy earlier in the year, in hopes to prevent the high chance of breast cancer she and her family members have due to a genetically passed-on BRCA1 gene mutation, we're very sad to report that the “unsung hero” in the actress' brave actions, her aunt Debbie Martin, passed away today after slipping into a coma.

As we've reported, the 61-year-old, who is Angelina's mother's sister, also carried the BRCA1 gene, and attempted to avoid the fate of countless family members by having an operation on her ovaries, still ended up developing breast cancer…and last night, suffered a seizure and was taken off life support at the hospital.

Angelina Jolie's Brave Aunt Debbie Battles Stage Four Breast Cancer After Testing Positive For Gene Mutation!

Even though we can't even begin to comprehend how difficult Angelina Jolie's courageous decision to undergo a double mastectomy must have been for the incredible, inspirational actress, it's clear that she made the choice knowing just how devastating the toll can be for those with the defective gene that is linked to both breast and ovarian cancer!

And not just because she lost her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, to the same disease!

Sadly, it appears that Angie's Aunt Debbie, her mom's sister, is now battling stage four breast cancer, even though she elected to have her ovaries removed after taking a test that showed she also carried the faulty BRCA1 gene.

Watch her bravery and perseverance, covered in a story for Inside Edition (above)!

So unreal to think that this disease has ravaged an entire family for so many generations, but hopefully, by coming forward and discussing their struggles so openly, women like Angie and her Aunt Debbie can break the cycle and raise awareness so others in similar situations have the information and resources necessary to make potentially life-saving decisions regarding their health.

Stay strong, you guys! You're in our prayers!

Angelina Jolie Underwent A Double Mastectomy To Prevent Breast Cancer!

angelina jolie breast cancer article

The sparkling Empress that is Angelina Jolie has JUST revealed that she recently underwent a double mastectomy in order to greatly reduce her risk of breast cancer!

In a poignant NY Times article, Angie expresses that ever since her mother began battling cancer — a battle she eventually lost in her 50s — the actress always knew she might be genetically prone to experiencing the life-sucking affliction.

The director and diplomat shares:

"My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.

Only a fraction of breast cancers result from an inherited gene mutation. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a 65 percent risk of getting it, on average.

Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex."

She goes on to describe her experiences with various surgeries and concludes the article by detailing her reasons for sharing this very personal information, information she's kept private until now.

Angelina expresses:

"I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer. It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested, and that if they have a high risk they, too, will know that they have strong options.

Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of."

We are incredibly impressed by Mz. Jolie's decision, not only to go under the knife, but to then share her story with the world in hopes that she can help someone prevent the terrible!

Fran Drescher Explains Why Chemicals NEED To Be Regulated

Living a healthy lifestyle means making informed decisions about what you are putting in or around your body. We don't know about you guys, but we don't want to put anything in our body that can cause cancer!

Fran Drescher's Cancer Schmancer movement is encouraging people to not only live a healthy lifestyle, but a preventative one too. In order to avoid a medical diagnosis that nobody ever wants to hear, we need to be mindful of the possibly carcinogenic chemicals and toxins that are found in products we use every single day!

With more and more chemicals being linked to deadly diseases, it's more important than ever to be an educated consumer and demand that our elected officials begin regulating manufacturers' unchecked use of dangerous ingredients.

Watch the video above for all the reasons why U should care about what goes into the products you use and support the movement at www.cancerschmancer.org!

Religious Exemption In New Birth Control Law Catches Criticism

We were excited to report that insured women would no longer have to dish out a copay for their birth control beginning in January 2013 under new insurance guidelines set forth by the Obama administration.

However, the health care law includes an exception for religious organizations that morally oppose contraception, which has frustrated members of both Catholic and pro-choice communities.

They feel that the exception could exclude thousands of women employed by religious institutions from the preventative benefits the new law offers.

For example, Catholics for Choice president Jon O’Brien in a statement:

“The multi-billion dollar Catholic health care industry has a lot of influence with this administration, influence that it has now used to allow religious institutions to ride roughshod over the needs of their workers. Not only that, it ignores the consciences of those who decide that to use a modern method of family planning is what is best for them and their families."

A spokesperson for Planned Parenthood said, overall, they were pleased by the new insurance guidelines, but "disappointed" that some women would be left out of the birth control coverage.

The spokesperson maintained their pledge to help women in need of affordable birth control, saying:

"Planned Parenthood will continue to work hard to ensure that all women, regardless of their employer or insurer, have access to the health care they need, including affordable birth control."

The new law is certainly better than nothing, but hopefully ALL women will have access to affordable and effective birth care one day!
