With the American Kennel Club's National Championship dog show approaches, there are many questions the AKC must answer.
For starters…why have they been so negligent in their duties to protect America's dogs?
The Humane Society of the United States is imploring the AKC to help take a stand against animal abuse.
According to the HSUS, the American Kennel Club is not protecting dogs, and over-breeding and puppy mills still dominate pet sales in this country.

Puppy mills are absolutely horrid, unforgivable and heinous…there's no ifs, ands, or buts about that.
The advances in technology have created online puppy mills, where commercial breeders can sell innocent puppies for profit, without caring for their welfare.
In a study done by 16 volunteers as well as investigators for nonprofit organization, International Fund for Animal Welfare, the team found nearly 750K ads DAILY on puppy buying websites as well as sites like Craigslist, eBay classifieds, and more.
Of these ads, 62 percent of puppy websites had dogs coming from mills.
The biggest culprit was

Across the country, there are puppies in dire need of help at puppy mills.
At puppy mills, the poor pups are stacked on top of one another in poor conditions with no way out.
Luckily, the San Francisco SPCA is out to stop these businesses from continuing operation.

Lorenzo Borghese, former Bachelor star, and The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has done an undercover investigation to see where NYC area pet stores get their pets.
They found that all the stores they visited buy their dogs from puppy mills.
The dogs at these mills are kept in small, cramped cages, and the more pet stores buy from them, the more dogs these mills will produce, continuing the cycle of cruelty.
So sad.
Check out the above video to see their expose.

In under ten days, the ASPCA's petition to close a loophole that allows puppy mills to escape minimal animal care standards, has gained over 10,000 signatures.
The petition was posted to the White House's "We the People" website. The site hosts user submitted petitions and if any petition reaches 5,000 signatures then it will go to the White House administration for review.
The senior director of the puppy mill campaign at the ASPCA said:

Finally!
We are so proud of PJ’s Pets! The nationwide Canadian chain has joined the new generation of responsible pet stores by deliberately ending their sell of puppies.
This week PJ's announced their stores will facilitate adoptions of pets in need of homes instead of selling puppies most likely from puppy mills.
Costumers might still be able find their next pet at the store. The chain is allowing rescue organizations to set up tables to hand out leaflets, show photos of the dogs and take adoption applications. Some stores will also have kennels with shelter dogs available for adoption. How great is that??
Michael O’Sullivan, the CEO of the Humane Society of Canada couldn't me more pleased with the company's decision. He said:
“I think it puts the responsibility where it belongs and it’s wonderful for the animals,”
Their new policy goes into effect Semptember 1, 2011.
