New HBO Doc Madonna Of The Mills Sheds Light On The Cruel World Of Puppy Mills

Filed under: Film FlickersAnimal RightsAdoptionPuppyDogRescueAnimal Cruelty

What a powerful trailer.

HBO will be airing a new documentary titled Madonna of the Mills, which sheds light on the cruel world of puppy mills in America.

Laura Flynn has rescued over 2,000 dogs from many puppy mills of Lancaster County, PA. In this doc, she exposes the "nasty secret" of America.

"All of those cute puppies that are sold in pet stores come from 'puppy mills.' Their mothers spend their entire lives in tiny, unsanitary cages, never walked, never petted, never doing anything but making puppies . When these dogs can no longer produce litters or money for their owners, they are put to death – stoned, shot, drowned or starved."

She is only allowed to take the dogs who are considered "useless" when they can no longer give birth to puppies.

Producer Kelly Colbert hopes that everyone can view this doc, "especially those still tempted to buy a puppy from a pet store despite the virtual inevitability that the pup was born of suffering, and the fact that buying a puppy mill puppy will condemn the breeding dogs to a lifetime of misery."

The documentary Madonna of the Mills will premiere on HBO2 on Wednesday, August 24. For more information about the film and the efforts behind it, including info on the dogs featured on the film, CLICK HERE.

It's a must-see for anyone with a heart.

It May Be Illegal To Sell Pets In San Francisco

It May Be Illegal To Sell Pets In San Francisco

Fresh off an unsuccessful attempt to make circumcision illegal, San Francisco has turned elsewhere for its next attempted ban: Goldfish.

The Animal Control and Welfare Commission would like to ban the sale of pets in the city, even goldfish.

The proposed ban seems destined to fail a vote of the Board of Supervisors (just like the ACWC's recommendation to mix birth control with birdseed to reduce the pigeon population).

We'd love to see an end to puppy mills, but is this the answer?

Denis' bff

Despite all her baby-daddy drama with the warlock formally known as Charlie Sheen, Denise Richards still manages to devote tones of time to animal rescue.

Richards, whose love of animals was documented in her 2009 reality show, It’s Complicated, has thrown herself into helping a local group called Best Friends Animal Society however she can. Silva Battista, the co-founder of Best Friends said:

“Denise is phenomenally faithful. She frequently comes down to the shelters to help us with whatever we need. She also sponsors animals, she comes out for our events and she really understands the issues. She’s been amazing.”

In addition to their animal sanctuary, Best Friends offers a unique program, Pup My Ride, which provides transportation for animals rescued from puppy mills and shelters to new homes across the United States.

“Whenever I’m in town, I volunteer for Pup My Ride,” says Richards. “They save 30 to 40 dogs that would be otherwise be euthanized and instead, places them into good homes.”

Law Makers Deem Anti-Puppy Mill Law Is "Too Costly"

Puppy Mills Suck

This is bull sh*t!

Missouri voters thought they scored a big win against some of the nation's most notorious puppy mills when they approved strict new dog breeding regulations last year. BUT NOW state lawmakers are changing the rules.

A state law aimed at cracking down on disreputable breeders and improving animal care has been overhauled by lawmakers who say the voter-approved version is too costly, and punished legitimate dog-breeders who generate an estimated $1 billion annually in the state. Animal advocates complain elected officials are overruling the will of the people and some are prepared to put the issue on the ballot again next year.

The president of the Humane Society of the United States, said public confidence is undercut when about 100 lawmakers change a law backed by about 1 million voters.

So True! Puppy mills breed a mass number of dogs in horrible conditions.

If the public votes puppy mills unlawful - they should be illegal!

Sophia Bush Wants You To Adopt

Sophia Bush Talks dogs

Just do it!

At the ELLE Women in Music event on Monday One Tree Hill star Sophia Bush said of her two adopted doggies - "They're the loves of my life."

Want to find that kind of pet bliss?

The actress says all you have to do is adopt:

I can't encourage people enough, please don't buy animals. Please, please adopt. I think it's ridiculous to support over-breeding, puppy mills, cruelty in any avenue — when there are thousands of dogs a day getting put down because no one wants them. And rescue dogs are always nicer than purebred dogs, anyway."

Patch is a brown, one-eyed pooch who was rescued by a crewmember on a movie Bush worked on, and Penny, who is a few years younger than Patch came from a shelter.

Still, other adoptable pets aren't always as lucky as Penny and Patch.

You've gotta go out there and adopt!

EIGHT MILLION Mummified Dogs Excavated In Egypt

EIGHT MILLION Mummified Dogs Excavated In Egypt

Sure, it was 2,500 years ago. But that doesn't stop us from wanting to back hand ancient Egyptians for this recently discovered puppy mass murder.

Newly discovered catacombs beneath the Egyptian desert are estimated to contain the remains of up to eight million dogs, many of which would have been offered to the gods when they were just hours old.

Others would have been treated as living representatives of the dog or jackal-headed god Anubis and would have lived out their lives in the nearby temple before being preserved and laid to rest in the network of tunnels.

The catacomb lies ten to twelve metres underground, and was built 2,500 years ago under the Saqqara desert.

Some of the dogs were killed and mummified just days or even hours after birth.

Scientists belive that in order to mummify so many dogs (perhaps thousands per year), it is likely the animals were bred in puppy farms.

The ancient Egyptian people probs bought the dogs, then paid for them to be mummified, in the hope of currying favour with the canine-headed god, Anubis.

The Saqqara desert also contains catacombs dedicated to bulls, cows, baboons, ibises, hawks and cats.

This this brutal practice is thought to have died out after the Romans conquered Egypt in 30BC.
