Ask A Vet With Dr. Jennifer Scarlett On Doggy Pee Problems

Here we have another 'Ask a Vet from the SF SPCA' with Dr. Jennifer Scarlett.

Some of us find that our dogs can be… "prissy" at times. Like refusing to go out in the rain. Someone with that exact problem wrote into Dr. Jennifer Scarlett, asking:

My one year old Havanese hates the rain. When it is raining he refuses to go outside, if you force him to he will not do his business. He waits to come back in and does it in the house. What can I do?

Dr. Jennifer responded:

Well, the driest place on earth is the Atacama desert but that’s no place for a dog.

We have a couple of options, but without question, forcing him to go outside will backfire. If your guy isn’t enthusiastic about going outside in inclimate weather, you may want to throw in the towel and go for indoor potty training, or at least offer a better option than the living room carpet.

You can find puppy pads at any pet store. They are basically flat diapers. There are also some fake grass options. If that doesn’t sound like a good plan, you’ll need to dedicate some time to train your pup’s opinion of a downpour. You’ll want to go with positive reinforcement training. So stock up on yummy treats and pick your cue word.

For example, let’s say “bidness” is your cue word. Every time you say it your dog gets a treat.

Then say it ever time you go outside—Let’s do bidness!—treat and happiness. Ideally you would start this training when the sun is shining but we can still get a lot of good work done now.

Remember, don’t force. The more cruddy experiences your dog has (being forced, pulled or unwillingly carried), the more stubborn the behavior will become. Also, if there’s any way to make a little shelter outside for your dog, that’d help—even a little tarp or tent will help on those downpour days.

So remember, it's all about positive reinforcement.

Stay positive, and the pup will pee!

Jason Schwartzman And Doggy Endure The Icky Rain Together

jason schwartzman dog walk in hollywood rain

Sunday was way too wet in Hollywood.

We realize we don't have to experience the perils of MaMa Nature and her flow as much as the rest of the country, but because of this, we become accustomed to sunny weather.

So when it rains, our bodies can't handle it. Excuse us, let's rephrase. When it pours all day and all night long, we can't handle it.

Seriously, even the LAX tunnel had a fit and flooded!

But Jason Schwartzman and his dog still decided to go out for a walk. They must have thought the gloomy weather would discourage being seen, but clearly that isn't the case. Cute dog!

“This rain is crazy! Our bar/pool table room is flooded&Lamar & I spent 20 mins getting FROGS out of our entry way! That was classic! LOL,”

Khloe wrote on Twitter.

“trust me I was screaming but laughing at the same time :) . OMG it was sooooo funny! LOL but apparently frogs love my house. (sic)”

Perhaps Khloe's unmarried sister Kim try kissing them.

Vanessa Williams' Dog Is Missing

Vanessa Williams

Oh no!

Vanessa Williams' 4-year-old Yorkshire terrier, Enzo, has gone missing in the midst of the torrential downpour of rain in Los Angeles over the holidays.

Vanessa's two dogs Enzo and Willa went outside in the backyard of her Bel Air home and chased something into the bushes.

Unfortunately, after 15-minutes, only Willa returned!

Vanessa believes Enzo slipped down a hill and was unable to get back into her yard. She said:

"We believe he's alive and was making his way up the street when someone took him."

Enzo was wearing his collar when he went outside on Dec. 20, but Williams suspects that at this point, his collar his gone.

She is offering a $1,000 reward for Enzo's return and urges people to call (310) 902-3363 if they have any information.

So sad!

We hope somebody reads this who has any information and can help Vanessa find her lost little pup!

Such a good owner!

Joe Jonas braved the rain to pick up his dog Winston from the Veterinarians office on Sunday.

Hopefully Winston wasn't there for anything serious.
