Washington Redskins Finally (Kind Of) Admit Their Name Is Offensive — But They Have A DISGUSTING New Excuse To Keep Their Mascot

no title

This is unbelievable!

The Washington Redskins are trying to preserve the trademark for their highly offensive nickname, and the NFL team is now going to great lengths to defend their position.

On Friday, the team — along with controversial owner Dan Snyder — filed an opening brief in an appeals court in the hopes that they could keep their nickname after a court just ruled the name was highly offensive.

But this opening brief has to be seen to be believed!

It seems the 'Skins are no longer arguing that their name is not offensive, which had been their argument up to this point.

NOW they are conceding it is offensive to some — but they're arguing that since trademarks have been granted to dozens of other highly offensive (and NSFW) names, the Redskins ought to be allowed to keep theirs, too:

Great work, California!

The Golden State has become the first in the nation to completely ban the use of 'Redskins' as a mascot for any public school sports team, with a bill signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown (pictured above) on Sunday.

The ban comes in direct relation to the ongoing controversy surrounding the NFL's Washington Redskins, and that team's refusal to change their mascot, which Native American advocacy groups and allies have continually said is racist and cruel.

With California's ban, the state joins communities — like Houston, Texas and Madison, Wisconsin — in ridding themselves of the racially insensitive term in the public realm surrounding sports and mascots.

California's bill, Assembly Bill 30, also known as the California Racial Mascots Act, prohibits public schools from using 'Redskins' for athletic mascots or nicknames beginning on January 1, 2017.

Governor Brown said of the bill, and other legal moves on racial issues:

Over the past few decades, the term "Redskins" has become extremely outdated and offensive to many, including those who don't belong to a Native American community.

Beginning January 1, the California Racial Mascots Act will give schools until 2019 to change their team names and to discontinue uniforms that bear the offensive term.

Obviously, the move has divided the state and not everyone is a supporter of the bill.

Those who DO support the measure explained:

Stephen Colbert finally got the chance to respond to the racism allegations tied to the trending #CancelColbert, because his last show taped Thursday, leaving him three days before he could respond.

Or as Stephen put it:

"So, in a sense I was cancelled for three days. Just like Jesus."

While you LOL infinitely over that, Stephen also gave a pretty great defense against the misinterpretation of the tweet in question, which was sent out by the show's Twitter account out of context:

Oneida Indian Nation Reps Say 'Redskins' Team Moniker Is Detrimental To The NFL

onieda nation redskins name

If you've ever stopped to realize that one of our NFL teams is called the 'Redskins,' then you know pretty well that it's actually very offensive to a lot of people.

And yet, it has not changed.

Well, it looks like Representatives of the Oneida Indian Nation finally got NFL executives to sit down and talk about the situation and how detrimental a racial moniker like that is for their community AND the NFL as a whole, and the even asked the league to sanction Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder for continuing to use a team nickname and mascot that "promotes a dictionary-defined racial slur."

Honestly, it's INSANE that this hasn't been changed yet!

One thing that did come from the officials was that they asked for all team owners to
