It should have never escalated this far, and we think both parties are responsible!
A preview for the film The Dilemma has become thrown into the middle of some serious controversy for a line in which Vince Vaughn's character uses the word 'gay' in a derogatory fashion, and now, not only the studio behind the flick, Universal, is being criticized!
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation issued an official complaint yesterday, but apparently, they knew about the film and had concerns about the line in question, but kept quiet about it until Anderson Cooper spoke out first!
GLAAD's director of public relations, Richard Ferraro, justifies the organization's delay responding with the statement, "Before we issue a call to action, we always give the entertainment outlets the chance to rectify what they are doing."
But many are concerned now that this incident, thrown in with the huge mess involving Adam Lambert and ABC from last year, just further proves that GLAAD is focusing too much attention on working with the aforementioned companies, instead of keeping tabs on the content that they produce!
Author/Radio Host Michelangelo Signorile explains:
"It just seems they are always giving the benefit of the doubt to the studios and the networks. Because they think they can get more done working on the inside and because they also give awards to the same entities and have benefits at which they all have to buy tables. There's an appearance of conflict of interest, which is troubling."
Of course, now GLAAD is back-peddling and maintaining that the studio had put the preview on-line before they could express their concerns, while Universal claims that the organization never expressed any concern over the trailer. GLAAD is now demanding that the original trailer, which is still being shown in theaters, to be pulled, and that the line get cut from the film.
What a mess! Especially now with all of this he-said, she-said nonsense!
However, we are disappointed with the way that GLAAD unfortunately handled this situation, and we sincerely hope that they can find a better way to maintain relationships with these media companies, without compromising the integrity of the cause!
Now is NOT the time to be letting these things slide!
