Because nobody asked him!
Elton John came out of the closet in a 1976 issue of Rolling Stone, but in a recent interview with Matt Lauer on The Today Show, the rock star explained that he would have come out sooner had someone asked.
However, coming out was the least of his concerns. He revealed that he feels guilty for wasting such a big part of his life to live the rock and roll lifestyle instead of joining the fight against AIDS in the early 80s.
Now he's making up for lost time and is not only raising massive amounts of money for a cure, but he's fighting the stigma associated with the disease, as well as discrimination against the LGBT community.
Watch Elton's inspirational interview (above) to find out why he feels lucky to be alive, how he's honoring those who lost their lives to AIDS and how he feels about Barack Obama's support for same-sex marriage.
