Sean Avery Wants The NHL To Support Social Equality

Sean Avery progressive

New York Ranger hockey player Sean Avery was one of the MANY people who stood up for marriage equality in the New York and helped grant same-sex couples the right to marry.

With the success of his efforts supporting the Marriage Equality Act, the winger wants the entire NHL to be more "progressive" and start supporting this and other social equality issues, saying:

"It would be great for the NHL to take the lead among professional sports leagues in terms of social equality and justice and be out front and progressive regarding issues like this."

We think it would be great too! Sports leagues and teams are in the perfect position to set the example because so many people love to watch them compete and look up to the players as role models.

In the meantime, Sean has been busy celebrating with the rest of New York and said:

"This is very, very special for a lot people across the U.S., in New York State and for a lot of my friends. What's a more genuine issue than having the same rights as everyone else when it comes to marriage? You don't have to be gay to know when something is fundamentally not right."

So true! We hope more NHL players share his sentiments and won't be afraid to express them in the future when other states want to follow in New York's foot steps.

Unfortunately, despite the increasing acceptance of same-sex relationships, Sean still doesn't think there is enough tolerance in the NHL for an openly gay player, saying:

"There would be so much to overcome, I don't think it's practically possible."

Bummer, but with players like Sean coming forth to express their acceptance, we have a feeling others will follow.

Equality for ALL!
